Good Morning, Would greatly appreciate if I could get some info on towing with a tow dolly.

I'm considering purchasing a Toyota 4X4 1981 Pickup in another state and towing it home approximately 300 miles using a tow dolly.  The tow dolly instructions show to disconnect the drive shaft, to prevent damage to the transmission, even if the transmission's in neutral.

Is this true?  you can damage the transmission of a Toyota during towing, even if in neutral?  I never heard of a tow truck damaging a transmission that is in neutral?

The idea is to purchase the Toyota, load it on the dolly and tow home.  If in need to remove the drive shaft, that seems way to time consuming.

Any body have experience with this?  Thanks in advance for any info.

Dude...the rear driveline is only held in with 4 bolts at the pinion flange.  Remove them and tie the shaft to the underside of the bed and be done with it.  It's not worth the risk of damaging something if you dont.  Regardless of the fact that others don't remove the shaft...you should to ensure nothing gets damaged.  Remember, you're putting "power" into the tcase/trans backwards if the rear wheels are spinnning everything.

i can remove my driveshaft in 3 minutes, if i use power tools, it take 30 seconds..... how is that too time consuming?

Ryan and Jimbo, Thanks for the info.
I am more educated know and will not take the chance of damaging the transmission, I will disconnect.  I was not aware it is a fairly simple task.

Thanks again, :gap:
