I have a 73 fj40 with a 4speed swapped in.... it has started to make a whine sound when you drive down the road also 4whl low isn't pleasant anymore makes some pretty bad knocking sounds.... Was running a set of 37x12.5x16.5 goodyear wrangler military oz's on her.....not sure if its the tranny or t-case makin the whine.
how strong are the transmissions on these?

Depends on how hard you are on it.  Toyota 4 speed I assume.  With stock gears I'm sure the it's seen some heavy loads.  I suspect the bearings might be shot in one or both the trans or t-case.  Sounds like rebuild/upgrade time to me.
