Sweet!  Another guy with an old IDI diesel!  They're SO much more reliable that a powerchoke!  I've got a 92 as well, and I installed an ATS turbo setup last fall..you WON'T regret it  :eyebrow:

Check out www.oilburners.net for a great IDI forum.  Has TONS of great info on keeping your old truck on the road!

Here's an old pic of mine...I've since added some factory 95-97 Alloy wheels and some leveling springs up front...

Thanks Tex...I should have said how nice your truck looks in the pictures too!

I really like the way these older Fords look with a little lift and 35's...  I want to lift mine, but with future plans that include a gooseneck, it needs to stay at stock height.  Do you have a trailer yet for your trail-rig?

Oh, does your truck have the 7pin trailer connector that uses round pins instead of flat RV plug pins?  My truck has that style of connector that was factory installed.  It's great, because I'm the only one in my group of friends with that plug.  Keeps others from borrowing my truck or trailer, because their junk won't hook up.

I have a 5th wheel hook up i just have to pull the camper off.  the on;y thing i really hate is the bench seat, i'm looking for a 60-40 seat and gona sell my bench seat. if ya come across one i'm looking for gray.

NIIIIICE lookin truck. Hopefully it will be pulling a sami to hollister for TTC. Also, I have some friends with older dodges and those cummins pump out soooo much power with some minor work. I have a friend with a 99 ram 2500 on 34's and his truck runs mid 12's. Diesel is where its at. I wish my truck wasn't a gas motor.

reklund5

Good luck finding a seat.  Check out the IDI forum on oilburners.net and see if anyone has one there.  I'm pretty sure your only option was buckets and a console, but I could be wrong.  From what I understand, that generation fullsize Bronco seats and consoles will go in with only a little modification...maybe you can scroung the pick-n-pull.  I'm after the same thing- I hate my bench seat, especially with the manual trans.  I'm keeping my eyes out for a rolled bronco at the yards here.

Ok....where to start?  Try to use some punctuation and proper sentence structure when posting.  While you posted some sort of information related to the topic in this thread, it's all jumbled up and looks like rambling.  Just because your Dad HAD an older IDI diesel, and it happened to have a problem with the transmission, doesn't mean that all are bad.  It is true that the E40D trans can have trouble, but it's been in service for years in vehicles that are used to tow.  Usually, it only fails due to poor maintenance, overheating, and overpowering.  Also, it's true that it is possible for the belt tensioner to fail, but usually anyone doing regular maintenance would notice the belt wearing funny long before the tensioner actually failed.  It is very rare that the tensioner just suddenly fails.

The E40D trans has been bomproofed by the people at Brian's Truck Shop  www.brianstruckshop.com  Contact them if you want a trans to tow HUGE loads with, or if you're looking at big power numbers.  As with any automatic trans that is used for towing, a good tranny cooler and a trans temp gauge are your friends.  It's hard to destroy a properly maintained E4OD behind an older IDI diesel...they just won't put out the power of a newer powerstroke.  (But they're NEVER plagued by electrical problems, or $250 ea. injector troubles...)  I'd start out with a thorough trans fluid flush and a good oversized auxilliary trans cooler, and a temp gauge.  (you'll want Boost, EGT, and Trans Temp gauges for sure)

Again, anyone else think we need a "Tow Rig" section here at Marlin?  Contact the mods with requests!  I brought it up a while back, but it didn't go too far.

I pcked it up for $4000   185,000   miles engine in good condition.
Another thing to keep in mind is the F250 - F350 went through a lot of change 93'- 94' getting a turbo charged engine. The way I look at it is Ford may have its down falls but they admit there problems, Dodge want admit their problems because their to proud, and chevrolet is SH$T.

Damn Tex, that F150 just wasnt cutting it huh. Thats a sweet ride. Deffenatly have the power to pull the runner and the Sammi. But...how will you drive both down the trail at the same time? Or will you pull some kind of chinese fire drill? :dunno:

ouch!! chevy sh$t?? pretty harsh there!!  it's all a matter of opinion, personal preference.
the ford 7.3 is a proven motor.. the cummins is darn near indestructable... early 6.2, 6.5 GM well .......
the 6.0 psd has lot's of problems   but if you get the chance to drive on 06' d-max (360 hp 650tq)
the only sh$t will be in your seat!!

btw: with the d-max u could tow the sami & runner together!!
all i want is a little more than i'll ever get!!
