i have a chance to pickup a mint  87 4runner with a 350-350trans to toy transfercase running on 35 boggers. i run an 87 4runner sas,Chevy's in rear, rears up front,488s,33 swamper's. i was gonna add gears to my transfercase or go to dual cases and go to 35s, but know i,m thinking maybe buy other 87 swap motor in to mine and tires switch back to 4.11 in diffs an put 22re parts in other runner and maybe resell it????just looking for opinions and if i put 350 in what will have to run for front springs or will rears hold up???
thanks john

you will have to add a couple leaves to the pack  and you will be REALLY front heavy,  now if its a late model with alum heads and alum intake and stock inner components,  i would go for it,  but only a fuel injected  system

otherwise  you would be better off staying with a toyota 3RZ  170HP  and maybe a 100 pounds heavier than a 22Re

Anyways, I am a big fan of horsepower so I say go for it. I have a buddy that has a 350 in his Toyota and it has a ton of power. That thing will put you back in the seat with 35" tires or you can just burn the tires off all day at any opportunity. I wish I could put my 454 in my 85.

Why a Buick 350?

i chose a buick 350 because it doesnt have the distributor/firewall clearance issue like the chevy 350 does, its lighter then the chevy 350 by about 50lbs, and i allready have the engine....just wont get it til i replace that with a 455 out of the car so i may use it for the truck

Oh, ok. I knew they were different engines but I didn't know why. Do they have the same performance potential as a SBC?

I've been down that road with a sbc in a 84.  Worst $25,000 invest I ever made.  Loved the power, but there was all these little things that drove me nuts.  Cooling was a big issue.  Found a decent set of headers, but needed a 2" body lift to clear.   It would run a 15 sec 1/4 mile on 37" mtr's though.   Low 14's with 35" bfg's.

Now I have 22r out of that truck in my current wheeler/ daily driver.

Spending $25,000 on a project truck would be why it was a bad investment. The SBC had nothing to do with it.

If it wasn't for the v8,  I'd have less than $10,000 into it.    Two motors $6000, two trannys $2500, rear end, ujoints, way too many radiators, gauges, carb, alternators, third members, gears.   Starting to get depressing?

what axles were you running and what tranny?

dana 60 rear, stock front.   Had a t350, then a so called built 700r4.  I should have bought a nv4500 instead of auto's.

yes the buick 350 has pretty much the same performance potential...in fact if u put the same both on on both engines it would take the chevy more tuning  get get all the gains....tplus its lighter then the chevy(415lbs with al dp intake)..and has more nikel content in the block...v type main..

only downside to a buick 350 is theres isnt currently an AL head nor AL single-plane intake...just dual-plane...*hopefully both will be released  sometime this year or next..

dood why so much for 2 engines...i could almost have 4 buick 350s for that price... hope that was including mods/install or something.

1 motor was $1000, 1 was $5000.  Was building the second one far a drag truck, then put a small cam in for my 4wd. Balanced, blueprinted, good pistons, heads, studs etc.  Everything was new except for the block.  And I can have 4 new gm goodwrench crate motors for that price.

And the buick vs chevy,  vortec heads on the chev, no contest.  Pre vortec, 210hp with hydralic cam,  vortec 250hp with smaller hydralic roller cam.   Chevy's the way I'd go,  But if you want to be different or have the motor already, go for it.  Just know there is a good chance you could dump some change into a v8 swap.

Not to hijack too bad, but I am planning on a sbc350/sm465/d300 swap in my 85 runner the end of this year.  Do I need to worry about more than beefing up the front of the frame for the v-8??
