SCORED!! some cool axles.
« on: Feb 04, 2006, 03:37:58 AM »
Just had to let it out.
I just scored a FJ80 front complete axle with the E-locker, paid $1,400.
Then I just got a rear Tacoma TRD complete axle, of corse with the E-locker for those who don`t know,$1200.
I paid a bit much for the rear, but they are hard to find, oh well, but all I have to do is pull the thrids, and have them regeared, and I`m set to go.
Now I just need to get them under my 1990 excab 4banger.

Almost 3g's for axles...I dont know much about those axles but for that price you could have some sick Dana 60's.

I actually didn`t go get the rear yet, I might canceal on that one.
But I have the front.
I don`t think you can find a front FJ80 much cheaper with the locker.
The junk yards here want $1500 for a fj80 front without the locker.

Junk yards are full of A$$ raping hippies.
They want way to much money for junk.    I dont know much about the FJ fron ends so I cant talk :pokinit:, i do think they are stronger than a regular toy front axle.  At least you will be diferent than all the rigs with 60's.

Yeah they suck, even as big as Denver is, I can`t find a TRD rear being parted out.

If you want an fj80 front axle then you got a decent deal, and if you bought a different axle then added an air locker you'd be right about where you are.  As far as the rear I'd pass, if you can hold out you should be able to get one for half that, maybe a little more.  Just don't get chevy 10 bolts  :gap:

minium price for 60 $800, now add up a driveline, COMPLTETE brake upgrade, wheels, rebuild it, high steer, and what do you get ~$3000 so yea 60's are not cheap i have done it before for customers.

eh.. 800 bucks.. clean it up days worth of work..  gears  150 bucks plus another 100 for install kit..  brakes?  pads.. ok 40-50 bucks at kragen..  and calipers if you need to.. 100 bucks  driveline?  pinion conversion flange to keep yer yota stuff  150 bucks from high angle driveline..  brake lines? hmm.. depending on where you go.. i can get them made for 50 bucks theres 1400 bucks.. same as he paid for the fj80 front..  and i have a stronger axle to boot with more width for better stability.. not to mention it weighs more  so better unsprung weight to keep you on the ground... your idea is flawed.  and wheels?  you buy those regaurdless. Ive also done it before for customers.

Scott39,  I hope you dont take all this wrong.  By no means do I mean any thing against you, I just feel that with that kind of money I would have done different and that just my opinion.  Too each his own, you wanted the axle, you paid what you felt it was worth, and thats all that matters.
I would love to see your build underway, with whatever you decide to put into it, for whatever price you want to pay.

While I would rather have a Dana 60, the FJ80 axles are very cool. It all comes down to what you are willing to pay to have the parts you want. I have gotten caught spending way too much for things. By hey, I wanted it and that was how much it costed. Good luck. Can't wait to see what you build with 'em.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

You can get a dana 60 off of pirate for $800, but then you have to pay for shipping.
I don`t won`t dana 60 boat anchors under my toy, and they are to wide, a FJ 80 front is 63.5" wide.
The dana 60 width, and weight is fine for a trail rig only, or if you are running a V8, but mine is a DD, 70-80 miles a day.
I have built up a dana 60,70, I had $5,600 into them, I got my dana 60,70 cheap, the same price you pay for just a front.
Diffs complete $1000
ARB`s $1700
gears and setup$1000
Hysteer  $600
35 spline outers $160
warn 35 spline hubs $230
rear 35spline axles $400
narrowed 1 side of 60 $200
misc $300

Now my 1990 truck rear needs rebuilt at 200k, I want the taco rear for the extra width (61 inches) to get closer to the FJ80 front width (63.5 inches).
So I can buy a taco rear housing non Elocker for $250 and build it with the Elocker(modify the housing) and buy a Elocker. Elocker with gears from marlin is $1300
Or buy the TRD one (no modifying the housing) for $1200 or cheaper if I wait, and then just regear the TRD for about $400
I want selectable lockers for my DD.

Keeping it all Toyota...priceless.   8)
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

figure this:

Toy rear IFS axle 86-95 used - $150
ARB locker - $650
Compressor - $200
Thats $1000, but you still have a much narrower axle.

I would try to get the axle for closer to $1000, even thats high but its a decent price and its exactly what you need to match that FJ80 front.

Actually, I have my other plan that I`am going togo with.
So the FJ80 axle will be up for sale.
I`m putting a chevy 6.5 turbo diesel in my FJ40 with ford high pinion dana60, and 70 rear, or the 14bolt that is coming with the truck.

ok why a 6.5??? take it from some one who works with those motors day to day(USMC Motor transport mechanic) and i wouldn't use one of those motors if it was given to me! if your gunna do a diesel and are goin to go with a mechanical go with a cummins. my DD is a 2002 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax and it is a great motor but they are a little exspensive to get ahold of. but anyways i like your axel decision. just think about a different diesel motor

Sounds like a plan. where are you getting the motor?  Just dont use a 6.2L, you will move at turtle speed :gap: , all the time.

what??

4BT is the cummins motor.

And good deals vary in different areas, and don't forget that just cause you or a friend happened upon a smoking deal somewhere doesn't mean somebody else who paid close to standard value didn't get their money's worth.
