l50 tranny problems.....????????

hi there, just got an 82, anyway the tranny has been giving me problems, it doesnt want to shift into first once the truck has been driven for 15 min or so or until it gets hot, shifts perfectly fine when its cold, i have to shift through the gears before i put it in 1st when it gets hot and sometimes even after going though the gears it still doesnt want to go in,.......whats going on with it????

kinda sounds like a bent fork, what  weight of oil are you running in the tranny  and is it full?   you should have 80/90 wt  in it

Begin by checking the oil -- just like the boss said :thumbs:

Then check the seat and socket, I bet they are waisted or missing.

Next, it gets into $$

I hate to contradict Glen here...but you oughta use 75/90 in a transmission for smooth shifting.  80/90 is fine in warmer climates, but if it gets anywhere below freezing where you are, the 75/90 will shift much smoother when the trans is cold...

thanks for all of the help guys, it turned out to be the master, i went ahead and replaced both the master and slave, shifts like a charm
