Yup, 5.29's is the way to go.  I wish I could go lower, but that isn't recommended.

One more vote for 5.29's to match the tire size, only drawback would be the smallish pinion so make sure you get a high quality R&P or you'll end up with a few missing teeth.

Did you see the thread about the 5.71's, I am considering this as an option so I can maybe use 5th gear on the hwy.

It's fine off road with lower t case gearing, but the ratio is to high to keep at speed in 4th at hwy speed and that is what you should gear for.

5.29's would be better for what you want but 4.88's are stronger . I went with 4.88's with 35's then went to 38's, its not the greatest on the road but it doesnt see much road time and when crawlin it doesnt matter .

Mark 5.71's DONT DO IT !!! you'll be breaking them left and right with your 38's! weak P'sOS !!

I don't know. On my last runner, I had a mildly built 22re, and 4.88's. I started w/32's, then eventually went to 37's. I had no problems keeping up with traffic, and liked having a "stronger" r/p....The only thing I really missed was when I went to 37's, I was back to almost stock tcase gears.(doubler, but no 4.7's):(

What HP is your engine rated at? I am sure it is more than 65 HP.

I would not recommend anyone use the 5.71, you just don't need them if you have any power at all. Use a lower Tcase gear set or double low range. I agree that would be stronger.

I carry a spare so I am not worried about them breaking. If it becomes a problem and happens a lot I will go back, but I am going to at least give them a try.

I have broken about 5 sets of 5.29's , 2 sets of 4.88's and 2 sets of 4.10's. The only gears I haven't been able to break was 3.90's , I exploded the clutch first.

All we can do is  :crossed:  :crossed: and see what happens.  :disturbed:
