Need some help here, we have an 89 22re 4x4 with a brand new motor. The motor starts fine runs fine until it warms up and then develops a (lean ?) misfire. the warmer it gets the worse it gets. It is not a continuous misfire but rather a miss every couple of seconds or so. We have replaced the o2 sensors with new factory ones. replaced throtle position sensor, cold start sensor , temp sensor, nox sensor, all of the vacum valves on the engine, mass air flow sensor , distributor complete, wires , plugs, injectors, coil, and some other things I cant remember at this time. have cvecked for vacum leaks too. ANY help would be greatly appreciated

THANK YOU

a quick PS
the TPS and computer have also been replaced
Thanks

Why did the computer and tps get replaced, and are you sure you got the correct computer?  And for that matter why did you replace all those other parts?

Look under the hood in the dark and you may be surprised at what you see.  My coil wire was shorting out right at the cap and was also shorting into the PS reservoir.  These wires were only like three months old.  I upgraded my wires and my miss went away.  Of course this was after changing the cap, rotor, and then another distributor, the coil and igniter and the computer.   :dunno:

We have looked under the hood in the dark on a moon less night , there is no sign of spark escaping and the wires are new. all of these parts have been replaced trying to locate and isolate the problem. Yes to having thr right computer, We even called Toyota to make sure, we have 3 of them, one in the truck one in a truck that runs great and one that we just happen to have, for those who want to know the # is 89661-35160. With each part we have changed there is NO change in the way the truck runs.

Thanks

Please keep the suggestions comming, something is making this truck misfire.

rlwjaw

Please , we still need help, This thing does not run right and we are at a loss as to what the trouble might be. If I havent been clear about something please ask questions or at least make a suggestion or  guess. Summer is coming and we want to get some miles on it before we head to the hills.
Thank you

i really hope you did a simple diagnostic check of the engine management before wasting all that money.

Have you ran the codes? what did you get in result.

rlwjaw

The computer only shows codes if we deliberately disconect something. As far as wasteing money we took these parts from another identical truck that we happen to have. This other vehicle runes like a dream, but when we interchange the parts there is no change in either vehicle.
Thank You

Lets start with the basics. Id check the compression first,I beleive the compression should be 147 with a max difference between the cylinders of 15 psi. When you started replacing stuff did you check for any fault codes? You may have a couple in there due to replaced sensors, clear em out by pulling the 15 amp EFI fuse under the dash. Check your timing,it should be 5 degrees with the pins E1 and TC shorted, also set your idle speed to 750 rpms. You changed your TPS sensor, you absolutely must set it for the engine to run right. If you need my help with setting it my email is [email protected],I just did my own this week=still fresh in my mind. Why do you beleive its running so lean when warm and what does it do when warm exactly? Ill answer any questions I can help you with. I have alot of experience with these old 22re engines, very finicky but I love these old bastards. Later  Mike

TOYMECH I dont want to seem rude but all of your questions have been answered in previous posts. We have cleared all codes. we have reset the tps for this motor. when cold it runs smothe as silk. when it warms up it begins to misfire . compression is 145+/-2. It is now too late to do any further checking of this engine. we took it out last night and are swaping in another today. will post how it goes this evening.
Thanks

toymech

Didnt see in your previous posts that you checked compression. No problem. Hope everything goes well with a different engine.

Well we just got back in the house. It may have bveen on another forum, I have been all over for help. Thanks for responding toymech. The engine we swaped in runs GREAT. there has to be something wrong internaly with this new high performance engine. the only thing we changed was the motor itself, we reused all the sensors , injectors. tps, mass air flow etc. This was begining to become a real heart breaker being it was a new motor and all.
All of you who made suggestions and did what you could to help we appreciate it. Other forums wernt quite as helpful and some were even a little negative in there responce. Not quite sure what we will do with this engine now, there is a lot of money tied up in it.
Again thank you to everyone

toymech

Thats crazy,a new motor causing so much greif. Who built the engine? Glad everything worked out.  Mike
