Best subaru for 4x4 project?
« on: Jan 19, 2006, 07:47:09 PM »
So which would be better to make a wheeling project out of a Loyale wagon or a GL wagon? I can get some for cheap and was thinking how cool of a project it would be to make a good snowboarding rig/mild trail rig, subaru on 31's. I have seen a few before. The GL has a 4lo &4hi T-case and the Loyale has push button 4wd. It would be nice to have a snowboarding rig that if I wrecked at the pass I would still have a car to drive to school, that is the only reason the WRX has only seen the snow 2 or 3 times.

WRX is a good daily driver, I want a good snowboarding and light wheeling rig at this point. I figure if this doesnt work out, I can just get the car dialed in and running well and selling it.

You're thinkin of selling the WRX??  Man, you change vehicles faster than I change socks :headshake:  If you're just looking for a snowboarding rig, I don't think it would really matter which you get :dunno:  I workwed with a guy who drove the GL wagon, and he loved taking it up to the snow.

hope that helps  :beerchug:

Oh no....the WRX will be with me for some time! I am talking for a side project. I have seen a few Subaru's done right. Most likely I will get it all running right and drive it around for a while and then think about modifying it. I just want to have something to drive to the pass. Right now I can only fit 1 snowboard in my car and am worried about wrecks and dings and all that. A subaru wagon running right could fit 4 people and 4 snowboards comfortably.

I had the 3dr. hatch back, that thing was a blast through the snow. The short wb worked good playing in the dirt too.

Subaru's are burly. I might be able to buy a Loyale wagon for super cheap from the guy that sits behind me in my auto tech class at my school. He is fed up with it. I think the rear CV just went and it leaks oil. He has a real light right foot so the damage isnt too bad. I will talk to him about it tomorrow.

Judging from past posts Dan, I'd say your runner is the least insane project you've done!

I dont want a brat, I cant throw my friends in it and go up to the pass in a brat. With a station wagon I can throw 4 snowboards and 4 people and head up. And make money off of the gas money they give me!

there's a local subaru club, from the pics i've seen they spend more time fixing their rigs than jeep guys.  looks like a blast, though!

i was always partial to old datsuns and 2wd toyota pickups for that kind of wheelin though.

You shouldnt try to make money off of your friends.   :headshake:  That's mean. None of my friends would do that to me. :nonono:  If they did I would kick their chintzy asses.

i had a 87 gl wagon drove it to the snow 3,4 days a week didn't change the oil in it for my entire senior year.  the thing was the snow champ stock.  they also wheel great.  the underside is all skidplate so you just get going about 40 and skip across the mud.  just make sure you get a stick.  mine was an auto  it was so gutless
