4cyl Vs. V6 Third
« on: Jan 11, 2006, 11:35:36 AM »
how much stronger is the V6 third compared to the 4cyl third? Is there really a huge difference? and what are some advantages/disadvantages to both?

I currently have 2 4cyl thirds with matching gears and 1 V6 third with a different gear ratio and need to know which ones i should use.

i would sell the v6 unit, unless you are running a high power engine or just beat the crap out of your truck..... otherwise, its probably going to be a lot more hassle then its worth

V6 diffs use larger bearings, larger crush sleave (OD), larger pinion, larger ring gear, larger carrier, larger spider gears, larger pins, etc.

If you have access to a V6 diff, then I would not even hesitate to put it in, especially since you've got a pretty heavy rig.

I have a V6 diff in the back of my '81.

The larger V6 diff is still called a 8 inch which is the same as a 4 cyl.

Since it has larger, thicker pinion bearings, it must use a shorter crush sleeve.
It has longer pinion teeth but the same size ring gear.
The carrier has larger bearings and features 4 spider gears with a cross shaft.

It has 9 external ribs instead of 7 found on the 4 cylinder unit which makes it much more rigid.
Since they both have the same bolt pattern and drive line attachment, it is a direct bolt in.

But...

What are the chances that he will break a 4 cyl 3rd, short of crazy abuse?
