Thanks Whiteman, that is helpful, I'm glad the measure a little skinnier then they are advertised... have you had any problem with the sidewalls? are they weak or fairly strong?

Hyena, Thanks for the info on the Irok's, I also here they do well in most terrains I just don't want a tire that will wear fast. Also, almost every tire I look at is over $300 a tire, that canadian though... its gonna cost me $1600 for a set of 4 Toyo's and thats actually one of the better prices.
I could buy 10 tires around here and not even get a rebate on the 11th, we don't get many deals in Canada and never free shipping :screwy:

They are not my tire's so I dont get the plesure of beating on them.  I cant say how strong the sidewalls are because we have never had these tires on a trail with root's and rock's to tear them up.

The truck really isnt wheeled all that much.  He has played on a muddy hill at my house and they kept him moving forward pretty well.   He also has a 3.0l V6 along with 5.29's so he has the power to get them spinning and keep them spinning.

i live in eastern oregon and have friends with mt/r's,well as far as not good in the snow and mud i will call that one lol.we have alot af snow and in the spring the mountians are nuthin but mud.and they all get around great.in fact i have friends with toyo's and they r not all to impressed with them now that they got to use them instead of just roll on the road with them.thats just what ive seen personally.thats y i bought 5 brand new 35/15/12.50 mt/r's,plus i got the sweet deal on em.i thought bfg but my best friend kept losing sidewalls from sticks when we went wood cutting,mt/r's wont let the sticks get in lol
85 xtra cab pretty stock for now but lots of stuff to come!!

I think I might go with Toyo's anyways... all tires have they're goods and bads. When the Toyo's wear out and I need a new set of tires then I will probobly test the MT/R's out.

I haven't had any experience with the toyos, but the MTRs always worked well for me.  They seemed to clean themselves well in the mud that I always delt with, and they gripped well on wet rocks.  I drove my truck to Reno last year in a snow storm, when they were at about 10%-20% tread, and they did just fine in the snow.  To give an idea, it took 9 1/2 hours to make a 3 hour trip.  I didn't ever have to toss it in 4, and when I did, to play around a little, those tires kicked a$$.  The sidewalls are awesome, especially for an MT essentially.  I got BFG MTs t otry something new, but I was definitelty impressed with the MTRs

Thanks for the info BLACKDOG, I will definitely end up getting a set of MT/R's some time, but this time I will test out the Toyo's and see how long they will last and what they can do.

Glad to see another east coast wheeler on here, even though you are like 5 hours away, and more east then me... :headscratch: . Been to Nova Scotia once, it was really nice, kinda like Maine, but somehow different. Couldnt figure it out, but I liked it. My stepdad runs toyo open countries on his truck, and those thing rock. They are wearing excelent, better than we both expected. He drives 75 miles to work every day, and has put nearly 30,000 miles on them, and they bearly look worn. Haven't experieced MTR's, but if someone handed me a set, I just may try them out. :disturbed:

I was looking at my truck today and it looks like the 14.5" wide tire is going to hit my inner wheel well in the rear, If this is the case I will have to run the MT/R's because they come in 12.5" wide.
Does anyone know about this? I don't want to buy spacers because I don't want to make my truck any wider than it needs to be.

Yotatilla, where are you from? Yea... Nova Scotia sucks, its just a big piece of granite and there is nothing to do and wheeling places are very limited.

I mean the wheel will rub where the frame is, not the top of the fender well. If that is what you are talking about :headscratch:

thats normal for the tires to rub there..  happens on everyones rig when running yota axles.

1Bad4Runner

So 14.5" wide should be fine?

Who thinks that is to wide? I always thought 12.5" was the best all around tire width. I also looked on the Toyo website and it says the 37" fully inflated is 15.6" wide :yikes: Thats huge.

How are the MT/R's if you get them sipped?

it will be fine..  14.5's are not that wide..  im gonna be running 16's on the back of my yota   on the street..  no biggy..  buddy o mine runs 40" boggers (18"wide)  on the street  on his yota.. ifs rear on 15x12 rims..  no problems  and they dont stick out terribly.  and he barely rubs on the frame during flex

If you mean siping, don't do it to your wheelin tires, with siping its just like putting a razor blade on you tread its good for a guy who does not go hard core off road driving. If you groove your tires that would be much better.

1Bad4Runner

I see, grooving is just wider and deeper cuts right? Do they make a big difference or do they make your tires wear faster?

Grooving is the right way, you can buy different size blades like 1/2" wide or 3/8" wide. Your tires will wear a little bit faster than normal.

Ok, thanks toybuilt. I probobly won't groove them because I will be putting a lot of miles on them and I want them to last as long as possible.

having them siped is perfectly fine  :shake:  and it helps tremendously on the road in the wet stuff  aswell as offroad.  have the place you buy the tires from do it so it doesnt void your warrenty.

Alright, what way do they sipe them? side to side? or around the tire?
I would think side to side would be best, I am right or just :hammer:

Ok, I'll see if it can be done by a local dealer, but if not is there a way I can do it myself? :headscratch:

you would have to buy a grooever to do it.. basicly you just flip the blade upside down..  yer local les schwab or big o should do it.. all the ones here will   err.. just noticed yer in canada.. so dont know if you have those there.. but  most bigger tire shops will

Im down on the border of MA and NH in MA, but do most of wheeling in Maine or NH. It's mostly trails and mud down here, save for a few rock piles. We made one in my buddies yard and that's the place to be on a friday night. I keep my truck off the rocks there, I have seen Birfs get eaten alive there too many times to count. Paragon is the best place to go, but thats even far away. This year its Telico or bust, hopefully have my truck done by or around the 4th.

Hey Yotatilla, I've been in maine before... its a nice place.
We don't have much good rock around here, only granit... but I am thinking of going down to Cali maybe sometime to go wheeling because they have awsome wheeling and I want to meet Marlin and see the shop.
I'm hoping my truck is going to be up and running in the next 2 weeks.

1Bad-
Cali would be nice, but I live by one law, and that's Murphy's. I would make it to the middle of Kansas and break down with no money. My truck should be done by the middle of summer, but that all depends on the whole cash flow situation. We do a lot of wheeling in mud ( ) and trails. Rock is hard to come by, though I recently found some up by my camp in NH. I figure I can make it to Paragon, maybe Tellico, but that's as far as I'll go. Trucks comin along nice, just wait until I start mine, there's gonna be pics galore.

on tire siping, i've read how to do it on the 4crawler site. seams pretty straight forward. also on that site he uses these centramatic wheel balancers. http://www.centramatic.com/ they seam pretty good. anyways just passing on info.

I got 37/12.50/15 Goodyear MT/Rs on a dd, or it was, and they ride great on and off road.  I priced them at discount tire direct and then got SEARS to price match.  I got (5) for under $1K...you do the math.

Here's a comparison to the 30s on my 87.  :gap:
