Im gonna explode
« on: Jul 03, 2003, 10:36:40 PM »
Ok I had an 83 toy and I rebuilt the engine drove it for about 2500 miles never had any problems, then I got ahold of an 85 with a blown motor so I swapped the motor into the 85 changed over the smog equipment and started it and now it starts but will only stay running if I give it throttle.  Could this be a timing problem?  Any suggestions? ( besides being content with what you have)    >:(

Well have u cjecked your fuses?  I had the same problem with mine and it blew the fuse for a relay in the carb. And vaccum hoses are a real good cause also.

ok no I haven't checked the fuses never crossed my mind. The truck sat for a year I am wondering if the gas has gone bad but it fires and will stay running as long as im on the gas.  I dunno I need to hurry and get it fixed by this weekend anything that I could try would be a great help.

The first thing I would do is drain the gas tank and put in some 91oct gas. Do this right away. Cant trouble shoot for other things when we know the gas is bad. My buddies SC swap would fire up if you floored it but then would act as if it had an engine brake and rev quickly down to zero and die. And this was a 91+ EFI system (Toy 4A-GZE).
His gas was about 6 months + how ever long the car sat before he bought it.

Fuses and vaccum lines are a great place to look. Was the 85 a Carb or EFI? Different fuel pump systems. Check the fuel filter of the 85 and its fuel pump. Make sure the ignitor has a good ground. How long had the carb 83 engine sat before this swap? Might have bugs and crap in the carb ....

Regards,
BigMike

Thanks for the imput bigmike.  I found a fuse that was under the dash labeled ignition it was burnt I found out it controlled the carb solenoid. I also drained the tank and put 91 octane in it idles now.  I have a new problem now when I set the timing to the correct position it wants to die but when the mark is way over on the right side of the pulley no where near the timing marks it runs good.  maybe 180 off?  Any comments

If it still isn’t idling right, check the anti dieseling solenoid

So a fuse was the problem cool,  for your timming make sure that u have all your vaccum hoses connected right and the ones that u r suppose to plug of are plugged while timming it.  Are u sure u have the right timming marks?  If it runs fine the leave it.  If u were a 180 out it wouldn't run fine and your exhaust manifold would start glowing cause of it running rich if it was a 180 out

I think because it is an 83 Motor and it has slightly different head and compression I need to set the timing to the 83 specs instead of the 85 specs that are on the hood any opinions would be helpful. by the way what was the 83 timing specs was it 5 degrees btdc at 750 rpm I cant remember any help would be great.

8 degrees, but first check and make sure your distributor is where it needs to be,  #1 tdc, you know the drill,  :hammer: then make sure your cam timing is straight up or advanced a couple degrees, it sounds like your dist is off a couple of notches,

oh yea with the other thing,  with a toyota engine if it starts but wont idle at all, check the fuse for the "fuel cutoff solenoid" or the vacuum switch that controls it.

when i still had my stock carb i used a switch inside the cab to power the vacuum switch, so i could disable the truck if i needed to :beerchug:
