Idle problem, 87 4runner EFI (TPS)
« on: Nov 19, 2005, 12:08:20 PM »
The first problem I was having was idle surge.  Engine would idle up and down.  I changed the TPS and adjusted it and that solved the problem.  Now I have a new problem.  When I am driving and I push in the clutch to come to a stop my idle will completely drops to around 200rpm.  Sometimes it will come back up and then it idles fine but most the time it dies.  If I am parked the truck idles fine, I can push the clutch and break in with no problems.

Anyone have any ideas on what it might be?  Could it still be the TPS?

This is just going out on a limb but i'd guess a vacuum leak. Like a booster maybe?  MC?  SC?

Sounds like when your trucks sitting doing nothing it can create enough vacuum for it to work correctly but once you take off and she's going then it craps out because of a lose of.. ??

If it drops when you press the brake or clutch i'd definently guess vacuum problem myself.

Just cruise about 5 mph and mash the brakes, see if it dies down. I had a similar prob with my 88' when I got it.. it was the booster. I changed out the master cylinder while I was at it because it was crusty as well.

If I am just cruising at 5-10MPH it does not do it.  It only seems to do it when it is dropping from high rpms around 2500-3000.  It does not do it when I am parked revin the engine and pushing in the clutch and breaks.  I have checked all the lines many times now and I am not finding any leaks.  This is really annoying.

That's the Dash Pots job.

Alternative, you installed a new clutch like my friend did and installed the throwout bearing backwards! Oops.
