22r running rough
« on: Nov 12, 2005, 04:14:34 PM »
Well its a 22re with the carb and intake from a 22r put on it when i start it up first it dosen't want to idle and it has no power i know that they don't have much anyway, it stumbles and wants to stall i have to keep it reved high to get it to move at all and to keep it running then i fight with it to drive it sputtering and stumeling. And after it warms up after 10 minutes or so it get some power back and it seem fine it seems to be burning more gass than it should to. I have done all the common things plugs, wires, cap, button, fuel filter and even a brand new carb any ideas. Its an 85 pickup if thats any more help.

:smack:    are you using the carbed distributor

also make sure your fuel pump isnt blowing fuel right thru the carb,  i bet its running really rich and stinky

No its not stinky at all. That confused me as well, i thought i would see that. How can you tell the difference in the two distributers.

what's your fuel PSI? did you do any thing to lower it? after going from EFI to a carb you have to drop the fuel PSI big time or it will over power the seat in the carb and pump lots of fuel into the carb and make it run like :pokinit:

And make sure the timing is right too.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

You *MUST* use the mechanical toyota fuel pump with a carbbed setup.  The in-tank EFI fuel pump will DEFINITELY over feed a carb.

Most of the EFI distributors do not have the vacuum advance fitting.  Only the real early ones do.  Also, the pickup coil is different because it allows the computer to change the spark timing a little.  The Carbbed dist. has the vacuum advance- you'll need that one to get 'er running correctly.

The truck was a carbed one originally but it does have a electric inline fuel pump, low pressure, because of the 22re block in the truck now. It does have a vacume distributer.

Just checked the electric pump that the guy put on it before i got it  and it rated for 5 to 9 psi and the stock pressure from the machanical one
is supposed to be 2.5 to 3.75 psi so that might explain burning so much gas.

Yup that may be it. I've run 7 for a short time with no big problems, but 9 would give ya some. I try to run from 3-5 psi.
