Odd engine noise 22RE
« on: Oct 28, 2005, 06:16:04 PM »
OK I have some issues after a bearing went bad on me. No.2 rod bearing was knocking really quiet soI shut it down and fixed it. Crank mic'ed out in spec and good clearance. Fired it up and let it run for 20 minutes to change oil and filter again. Was quiet the whole time and ran fine. After changing the oil and filter I left it running again. After full hot it starts ticking like valves loose but goes away after tapping the gas and comes back after a minute or so. I checked the valve clearance and its good. and they are good.

I cant find anything wrong anywhere. I've checked it over really good. T-chain is tight, valves in spec, no broken springs, Plenty of oil and no dirt. I actually pulled the valve cover and ran it cause it sounds like its running dry on 1 or 2 rockers but its not.

The really odd part is it seems like its getting better :headscratch: . Just wondering if anyone ever heard of something like this.

94toy what year is that 22RE?

My 88' did the same and was told that they ALL do that, nothing to worry about. I know a certain year toyota they machined the block out of a different type of metal so when it expands and retracts it'll cause noises and also oil lose!

Did it actually spin the bearing? reguardless you now have metal shavings in your oil journals. and other bearings.

I am 99% sure that it's that same rod bearing your hearing.....not your valves.  It WILL go away with slight throttle.

Motor never made noise like this before. The bearing was wasted but not that bad(copper but not torn up) and crank was fine as well as the clearance with new bearings. It just barely started making noise and was shut down.

The noise is deffinitly coming from the top end. I looked close at the valve adjuster ends and they are pretty worn. They should probly be changed but I dont think that is the noise. They are original an have 140k of hard miles on them.

There was almost no signs of metal in the motor before when the bearing went bad. I split before the old and new filter to check. I had removed the valve cover before tearing into this to check for metal and found none.

Before when I started hearing the rod knock it was only if it was reved and decelled. Its a totally different noise now. Deffinitly not a rod knock. Oh and if it was a rod knock it wouldnt be getting quieter the more it runs. It now will actually come and go. I let it run tonight and it went away for awhile then came back but not as loud then went away again.

Oh yeah it a 9422re with a dual chain metal backed guide setup in it. The rest has been made stock again awhile ago.

if it didn't damaged the crankshaft or the rod journal. sounds like you caught it before it went fully through the bearing then.

How did the bottom of the oil pan look, right at the pick-up? any metal there?

Hope you get it figured out :crossed:

I took it out this weekend. After a half hour cruising through PAP I let it idle and no noise. Havent heard it make any noise since then.

I beat on it pretty hard this weekend with no issues. I even had the full throttle assault to get it off its side and its still nice a quiet

Drained the oil and no metal particles anywhere in the oil, filter or on drain plug

I've owned many toyota that had this really light "tap" typically its louder in the morning when she's warming up but they've ran for 100,000's of miles without any problems. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

Figured I'd update this. It has been quiet since way back when oil changed twice and no metal found.

Wow I almost forgot about this post. Engiine is nice and quiet since first run with new bearings. No metal ever found either. Its had the crap beat out it. Noise never came back even after being hydro locked 2 times and tons of full throttle hill climbs. Wish the dam thing would die so I can toss my SBC in there already.

Agreed, plan on cleaning up your engine compartment and the bottom of your hood if you do.
