Anybody broken an Aussie Locker Yet?
« on: Oct 25, 2005, 08:29:27 PM »
I know there is a lot of Aussie Locker discussion on this board, but this thread is for two simple questions:

(1) Have you, or do you know of anyone that has, broken an Aussie Locker?  Describe setup and driving style.

(2) If you have one installed, how long have you had it without breakage?  Describe setup and driving style.

1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

I emailed the engineers at Torq Masters and this is the response that I got back.

"We have thousands of Aussie Lockers in use, many, many hundreds in the front
of Toyota diffs with every possible combination of large tires, wheeling
conditions and driving styles and there has never been an Aussie Locker
broken, in any installation, in any vehicle anywhere in the world. We have
had one warranty claim covering thousands and thousands of lockers and that
was caused by a spacer that was not properly  heat treated. We ended up
buying our own heat treat company so we could totally control that process
and have not had a repeate of that issue.

The Aussie Locker has the only warranty that does not exclude coverage if
you have high horsepower or large tires and that just shows our confidence
and experience with the reliability of the Aussie Locker.

We hope that answers your question, but if not please let us know."

i had one in the rear of my 85 xcab with 35x16 boggers and dual cases, broke the crap out of it going up a loose grade in a rock quarry, no bouncing or turing, just all the weight of the truck in the rear and pedal down, it was in for a year before hand, and it was warrentied out, i sold the axles before i installed the new one, but a buddy of mine bought em and wheeled the con with 37s for 2 years with no probs

Dan could your breakage be caused by this "spacer" failure that they talked about? My next purchase coming up very soon is going to be an aussie for the SA that I have. I got to get this thing together and sealed up before it starts raining too much and thats the last part I need to finish it.

the failure was due to excessive play in the bearing at the pinion, causing a slamming into the ring gear, and alot of torqu load on the locker, since i bought the whole third from an off road shop, theyt warrentied everything

Ah I see, I thought you meant that it was the aussies fault and that aussie warrentied it out. gotcha now

 :offtopic:

Since this is my thread I can be off topic if I want too!

I read a story online about a Jeep that blew up a Detroit EZ and took out almost everything in the process.  Tractech covered all the parts, labor and gave the customer the choice of another EZ or a free upgrade to the Soft Locker.  Great customer service!

There was a review on pirate 4x4 a while back.  You could see if it has been updated.

No problems with mine yet but I run it in the front.
I may change the rear lockright out to a aussie locker too. Either that or I will just weld the rear and sell the lockright.

I had mine in the rear of my old truck for a while and now I have it in the front of my new truck.  it is holding up good.  I pulled the third out the other day to check for any damage and there was none.  It was kinda a pain to install though cause i had to grind out the carrier so it would fit in there.  It is still much better than the Quik-loc I had in my willys d44 in every way

I just took the new Aussie Locker for a quick neighborhood spin for initial comparison.  On the local dirt road, in the rain, it felt about the same as the Truetrac limited-slip but did crawl up on a wet log more easily that I would have anticipated with the Truetrac.  I locked it in on pavement (parking lot) last night and it definately binds way more than the Truetrac.  I drove it home today on the pavement with the hubs locked in 2wd and hardly noticed that it was there, the limited-slip was more noticeable in that situation.

My initial reaction is

I've been running mine for just over a week now. It is in the rear of my 89 extra cab. I have 31 inch tires and 4.88 gears, it is a DD and I've had no problems with it yet

Yeah I thought I did but when I pulled it apart last weekened everything was still in tact. Still dont know why it clicks and pops as much as it does. Going up the snow with my tires spinning that thing just clicks and pops.

I think I scattered mine a few weeks ago in the runner.  I came home and threw an ifs rear in.  I will post more once I pull it apart and check it out.

If you actually broke the locker, and not just the pins, contact Aussie Locker, you might be the first.

I have had an Aussie locker in the rear of my 85 4runner for the last 3 years or so and it works nicer than the lock rite which I ran for 5 years.  I am running 33x13.5 Toyo MT's and have a Marlin 4.7:1 transfer case.  I run a Toyota electric locker in the front so my traveling on snow covered roads is a little more predictable.
