I was leaving from work on Thurs. and I started getting a ticking/ grinding noise from my 3RZ-fe.  I had it towed to a garage and they found that one of the balance shafts had worked it't way out and destroyed the bearing race in the block...I'm pretty sure that's the correct explanation.  I had replaced the timing chains but not the balance shafts and bearings.  The engine had 140.000 miles on it and ran like a clock.  I was told that it was just a freak failure.  I was pretty upset as I had just spent nine months getting the rig going, drove it for five months and this happens.  I am in need of another 3RZ if anyone knows of a good used engine.  Preferably a distributor model.  Mine was a `96 Tacoma.

Thanks... :rivers:

dangit man, :smack:  that totally sucks i have seen deisel blocks with bad balance shafts bored out and a larger bushing installed,  not sure if you can do this on the 3RZ  but i would think you could

Can you find 3RZs without any wiring on Ebay or somewhere for around 6 bills or so? Maybe not?

BigMike,

Here's a pic of the spun bearing.  It was about midway in the block on the balance shaft.  Like I said it was a freak failure.  I did get another `96 with 48,000 miles on it and it's installed.  I noticed that I have more oil pressure with this one.  I was able to salvage the intake, throttle body, fuel rail, injectors, sensors etc. from the old engine.  I did get a used W56D in place of the W56C.  This is a good one with no gear noises and it doesn't pop out of first   I'm still real impressed with the 3RZ and believe it is one of the best mods on the truck.

Just thought that I would let you know what happened for the record.

I only have about 200 miles on this one.  Hopefully I can make the next roundup especially if it is in Moab.

Said it before but, I dig your rig man!  Even in stock form those things are kinda neat.

anybody make a balance shaft eliminator kit yet for these engines?  i think they're a stupid idea for an engine that sees any serious use.
