Topic: turbo motor runs weird

ive got an 86 4runner with the 22-rte motor with under 3000 miles on it since a rebuild.  It starts hard and then acts like it wants to die until you give it some gas for a about a minute then it idles somewhat smoothly.  If i try to drive it as soon as i get it to start the engine surges and acts strange.. im realy not sure how to describe it better than that.  I think the timing may be off, but i cant find the factory specs on what the timing should be so that i can adjust it.

first off was the turbo rebuilt or a new one put on since the rebuild? and what about the gap on the spark plugs on turbo motors that means a hole lot more then on a regular motor so make sure that they are gapped right and as for the timing i would say 8d BTDC. and let the motor warm up to a safe temp befor driving. factory timing specs is about 5d BTDC so i would adfance it to 8 thats what i did on my 22r i hope some of that helps you

could be the fuel check valve in the pump. it's there to keep fuel presser up when you trun the motor off. and when you start it will then run for a moment while the pump makes presser.

my 86 non-turbo did the same thing. I never fixed it and it was stolen before I got a round to it.

this aplies if it's only at start-up and then just for a few moments.
