Toyota '88 4Runner SAS ?'s
« on: Sep 07, 2005, 10:01:49 AM »
Im going to be working on my SAS here pretty soon, basically I have a friend who can fabricate most of the parts, but there are obviously some that he cant, like shocks for instance, what shocks do you guys recommend? I am not exactly on a tight budget but I want some shocks that are at least under $70 a piece if that makes sense... And also the front driveline, what should I do about that?

Bilstien. Hands down. I found mine on sale with a PBB vender for $50 a piece + shipping. 5125's. Best shock I've ever owned (just drove the truck for the first time yesterday) I've always had elcheapo twin tube shocks.....never again.

For a front DL....go square. Cheap, tough and easy to make.  :twocents:

How do you make a square drive shaft? Does it affect how the rig drives down a road if I had to have it in 4HI on a highway or something?

If money isnt the biggest issue, why not get one made the right way? Why go square?

All your questions have been covered hundreds of times. I hate to be the one to say it but the search button is a powerful tool in gathering just about any information you want about fourwheeling either here or on Pirate4x4.com's bulletin board. The SAS is probably the most common topic so there is tons of info on the topic. If you don't want to search just look at Marlin's products. They offer the best parts for almost any Toyota application. For driveshafts, I know many people who swear by High Angle Driveline. Good luck on the build.  :)

Do you have a phone number or a website for Northwest drive lines?
Yes I realize that I can search through the forums...

it's in the phonebook, or on yellowpages.com  why should someone else look it up when you can do it yourself.  SEARCH and dont ask questions that you could've answered by yourself in the amount of time it took you to type that post.  i could've, and not posted this, but then you would continue not searching and asking questions that you can easily find out with just a tiny bit of work.
in the projects nooga, anything goes

Haven't had mine in 4 high yet so I can't comment on the shakes. I've "read" that some have had them up to 50 mph without vibes....doesn't sound right to me but mine is as true and square as you can get.

How do you make one? 2" and 1 1/2" square tube. Weld on ends....driveshaft.

If you want to spend $350+ for a highangle by all means. My rig is not a cheap thrown together POS....but the 1/4" front square shaft makes alot of sense for 20 bucks worth of material.

It's your money though. Any place other than highangle should be able to do what you want/need. Shop around and try and find a local shop. If you have issues you might be better off dealing with a local guy than shipping yours someplace. Not saying anything about Jess and his business....both are GREAT and I've ordered many parts from him. ;) Just giving you options.

Well thanks, that sure was helpful, I didnt mean to make anyone feel like I was being lazy or something, but sometimes its nice to start a new thread for your specific issue.
