I was wondering if this engine is any good, I have a 1989 4Runner and am thinking of dropping this motor in it to run bio-diesel in.

The motor is in a 1981 Toyota Landcruiser with a 4 speed transmission. I may also turbo charge it if I can find a cheap way to do it.

Does anyone know anything about diesel's? I heard that this motor is gutless without turbo... but I'd like to know if it would move the truck along good.  :help:

That's a pretty heavy motor for the front of your runner. 3.4L 4 cylinder.  Great engine.  Will last a long while if properly maintained. Maybe gutless in a 5000lb 60 series, but works just fine in 40 series.  Turbo gives it some good punch but not necessary- it really depends on what you expect.  Don't expect to be going 70mph up a hill in the passes.  Recommend replacing the head right off with a hi-nickel content head.  Most come from POs cracked because temps got up too high.

I know this is old and I just never noticed that someone posted anything, but does anyone know exactly how heavy this engine is?
Also, I though that the heads only cracked in the inline 6's? and they are very fine hairline cracks. :headscratch:

would be a great platform, excellent torque.
unsure of the weight, but a good guess would be that it is around the weight of the v8 gas of the era

I couldn't find the weight of the motor, I would assume around 500lb.

Are you planing on using the trans from the land cruiser because wouldn't you run into trouble with the rear drive shaft being off to the right hand side or are you using a diffrent t-case.

1Bad4Runner

Right now my project is on a standstill since I am in school and can't afford anything right now, BUT... I was going to use a w56 because I have an adapter for a 350 and a Toy tranny. The 3B has the same bellhousing as a 350.

OK, I thought you were going to use the 4 speed you mentioned above.

1Bad4Runner

It has a 4 speed attached to it, but I wouldn't use it. Also, don't mind my post adove, it is completely wrong... I was thinking about the 4BT Cummins.

there are no other tranny choices whe going with a 3b diesel... there is either the factory 4 speed or the factory 5 speed. the gassers with the 4 and 5 speed wont work becuse the input shafts are completely different as well. I also believe that there are no adapters made for the 3b diesel as well to adapt to a different tranny.... the 5 speeds have a 4.9:1 first gear though so its pretty good... if you found a JDM 4 speed than it would have the same first gear but good luck with that one...

as far as weight goes, i am pretty sure the engine, tranny and tcase combo weigh in at aboot 1500 pounds give or take 100....yes, its heavy!!!!!

the engine in stock form produces aboot a whopping 86 horse power but oodles of torque. I prefer my diesel over a gasser any day......for wheeling anyways. 8)

as for the turbo, you can turn your exhaust manifold upside down because it has the same bolt pattern either way and people mount anything from 2.2 dodge charger turbos to dodge diesel D50 turbos... I personally am going to mount a turbo for a cummins 3.9 engine....
the never ending build...
