I just saw the update...  Congrats!  This must be the longest 3rz swap on record!

Sounds like you missed the same power source that I had missed during wiring.  On the '98 taco there was a 12v power splice within the dash harness, it wasn't obvious at all from the EWD.  I think it powered the coils, MAF, and a couple other things.  So you're in good company.

5.29's ??  I thought you were going to run 33's or similar?

I called ORS about the wiring issue yesterday and I was supposed to hook up a wire from their harness to the 1 wire connector coming out of the engine fuse box to the '85 injector resistor.  It gets power from the fuse box, and stupid me connects it to the injector resistor that has nothing running to it!  I should have been able to figure that out on my own.  Oh well, it's running anyways.

Nah, I just scored some 35" Cooper Discovery STT's off of Craigslist for $500.  They have less than 1k miles on them.

I worked on mounting up my PRP seats the other day.  Man, those things are frikin' huge!  I got the fat boy ones (wider buckets) and won't be able to fit a center console between them.  They are really comfy and I got the brackets all fabed up with sliders so they are staying.  I was really supprised when I couldn't even fit a super narrow ammo box between them.  Oh well, I guess I'll just mount a Mag Light in there.

Oh, and for the record, the 10k Ohm resistor mod works with the 3rd gen 3rz motor

I have to get the clutch line all fabbed up and blead before I can take it outside and get pics

Just got the P/S system up and functional.  I had to get a custom high pressure hose made from a local company.  The stock 3rz hose was way too long for my taste.

Thanks again Bkubisht for telling me about Stanco

If I get the clutch line fabbed up, I can take it outside this weekend!

Can you post a video of the tach working along with the sound of the engine revving? :crossed:

I'm not sure if I can BigMike, but I do have a video camera that records to a hard drive, so I will try when I feel better.

I am in the process of swapping a 2002 3rz from a auto tacoma into my 87 turbo pickup and am wondering what to do with the evap system. Maybe you can answer me in if i just run the motor without the evap system will the motor run? Will it run correctly? I am running a gas tank from a f150 so i doubt i can even fit the intake stuff in mine like dean did. Or can i make a evap canistor work from like a 2000 4runner? Or do i have to swap out the whole engine harness like you did? I dont want to do this since i already ordered my ORS harness for the 02 3rz harness. Any suggestions? Also what did you do with all the engine wiring for the auto trans? I have like 4-5 plugs all for stuff on the original auto trans and i woulk like to delete if not hard but dont want to have to remove the entire engine harness.
Thanks

Ok, here's what I did:
3rz is from a 2004 prerunner (auto trans)
engine harness is from a 2001 2wd taco (2rz) 5spd
evap canister is from a 2001 2wd taco (2rz)
ecu from a 2001 2wd 2rz (a lot easier to find)
ORS Harness.
homade egr block off plates.

The evap system from a 2001 2rz is a lot easier to plum into most conventional fuel systems.  The 2002 and newer models have a evap system where the canister is right by the gas tank and uses some funny style fittings (like Deans setup).  The 2001 2rz also has no egr system, so removing the 3rz egr pipe and valve are not necessary, but make for a cleaner install.

After looking at wirrins schematics for the auto trans, I determined it would be easier to run a engine harness and ecu from a manual trans - that's why I went with a 2rz harness.  Everything plugged right in.  The ORS adaptor harness should give you everything you need to hook up to the sensors on your manual trans.

Well I just ordered a 2000 5spd 3rz engine harness, 5spd ecu and all evap stuff fro $500. So i hope it all works. Especially with my ors harness. :crossed:

Make sure that this harness has the connectors for all 4 coils or you might as well cancel the order!  I believe that 2000 was a transition year from the 2 coil (2nd gen) to the 4 coil (3rd gen) motors.

I don't have the evap stuff hooked up and it runs great. It does have evap codes but it still runs fine. Mine are just all blocked off. Still wanna see that tach working though.

bkubisht

Budderz, this inquiring mind wants to know how you're going clear it through the referee.  Doesn't the ECU report 2001 2rz when scanner is plugged into the OBD2 port?  The lack of EGR certainly screams 2rz.  Maybe you'll need a 2rz sticker for the motor, or at least remove the 3rz sticker from the valve cover.

Do you have any pics or a diagram of how you ran all the vacuum lines?

jmsdad

Here's a way to get rid of the evap box.  Not mine...found it somewhere

I can't get rid of the evap box though, I'm in Commofornia

I just want mine too run correctly. My truck is trailered everywhere but it would be nice to be able to drive it down the street to the gas station. If the evap is deleted will it put the motor into limp mode or make it run super rich? I am going to try the 2000 harness and evap and if i cant get it working i will delete all the evap stuff. Does anyone know how many catalytic converters are on a 2000 4 coil 3rz?

BUDDERS

I know it will run fine without the EVAP system.  Not sure how much the cats are for you're engine.  Mine came with my motor

I just dont know how many are on a 2000 3rz, The 2002 had 2 cats and 2 o2 sensors but i dont know if the 2000 motors take 1 or 2 cats.

BUDDERS

Yeah, I can't remember either.  If it came without the shorty header, my guess is it should only have 1 cat.

2 cats?! damn gina!! I just bought a cat for my 99 3rz today at a hefty $275, two would suck.....i could have gotten it online for $205 +shipping but i'm too impatient for that. I'm about 2 weeks away from the smog ref.

Hey Budders, Have you taken it to the referee station yet? If yes, did you have any problems with ecm being from 2rz and motor being 3rz. Secondly, did you have any issues with the egr stuff being removed? I'm in the process of acquiring a 3rd gen 3rz with 16,000 miles and want to collect as much info as possible. Thanks\\\Gus

Nope, it hasn't been to the refferee station yet.  I still need to install the rear O2 sensor for it to even be considered.  If it doesn't pass, I'll probably just register it to my buddie's address in Arizona.  I've got too much work into this thing to try and re-do all of it now.

So I tried driving it around my complex a while back and the 35" tires rubbed so bad I decided to do my Marlin Trail Flex kit before getting it smogged.  I have learned a lot obout welding in the process, but the process is not done yet.  Right now, I'm knee deep in the front suspension.  I got the front spring hangar and springs hung as well as the front axle housing all gusseted and armored.  My buddy regeared my front e-locker for me and took forever, but he isn't charging me so I can't pregnant dog too much.  Now the front e-locker is in too.  He's got the one for my rear housing now and is re-gearing it too.  I hope that doesn't take as long  :crossed:.

As for now, I'm at the stage where I'm building the front knuckles/brakes.  I got the fj60 rotors, IFS brake calipers and a 1" master cylinder so it should stop ok.

Still on the "to do" list:

1.  Finish front suspension/hysteer

2.  Do rear suspension

3.  have exhaust work re-done with rear 02 bung - possible right side exit

4. install proper oil pressure sensor

5. body armor

6.  wire up e-lockers

I'm starting to think I should have gone with 37's now cause those 35's are looking small with the fiberglass fenders.  I could probably get away with 38's easy.
