Put your finger in it and give it a whiff.  Does it smell like gear oil or not?

You have gear oil in your nuckles.  The inner axle seal in toast.  Your gonna half to replace the grease in your nuckles when you put the rebuild kit in.

Try to re-do the whole the thing with brand new parts. Take your time, clean each part, then take some high grade sandpaper and sand the ball part(knuckle where the seals are at the ball part) till its smooth get all the rough edges and lines out any roughness will make the seals not be right and leak. Thats just my experince and dont forget to freeze this stuff in the freezer before trying it. If you dont believe try looking at 4x4 builder magazine dot com or their magazine it tells alot of info about rebuilding your toy front axle. Thats where i got that info. Good luck.

this has been  frustating for me, I did all this work replacing every seal and bearing in the front axle to get rid of the DIF oil dripping from my lower knuckle bolts.  All this just to have the inner seals just start leaking again :snare:  less that one year after I did the work.  (I do not tollerate leaks  :nonono: )!!

So my questions are:
What could i have Messed up, over looked, or not done right seating the new seals?  I was very carefull, took my time, and used all new parts.

And do the Inner front axle seals on Solid axle Yotas' fail regularly?

O-Yeah?  marry the girl that smells like gear oil.  ya never know it might come in handy on the trail

Did you remember to grease the axle seals before you put them in?

Yes, i put a light coat on the surface of the seal when i pressed it into the axle housing, and a very light coat on the inner portion when i slid the axle shaft back into the housing taking care not to deform the seal with the weight of the axle shaft.

The only other thought I have is that your axle or axle tube could be slightly bent, causing run-out that's damaging the seal.

My left rear seal leaked like a sive for a while. When I pressed off the bearing, found out that some brain surgeon used a die-grinder to cut off the bearing, and put a 1/16" groove in the axle shaft. Filled it with a sealer, and pressed on a new bearing, and so far it's worked well. Prolly have to replace the axle eventually.

I am having the same problem and I too hate leaks. my driver side leaks like a loose sleeper a month after replacing my seal. I am pretty sure my axle housing/shafts aren't bent because they slide in an out very easy, so the next time I replace the inner axle seal I am going to check where it is warn, because I have a feeling that I may have the knuckle shimmed  wrong and it may be pushing the shaft down on the seal or up on the seal. I don't know though, so any input from others on my new theory is welcome because I would rather not tear it down if I am not going to get the desired results.

you just hit the nail on the head there grasshopper,  check your trunion bearings and make sure you are evenly shimed top and bottom,

sagging trunion bearings  or a stack of shims on either the top or bottom and none on the other will get you a greasy wheel

Also-  Be VERY Careful when knocking that inner seal into the axle housing.  It's really easy to bend the metal portion of the seal allowing a leak.

Dolan-

Good thoughts on the trunion bearing shims...that one hadn't hit my little brain yet.  We should check that out for sure!

Those are good ideas i didn't think about.  Thanks guys.  Of course i  :shudder: to think it is a bent housing, not much i can do about that i wouldn't think (correct me if im wrong).    As far as checking the shims go i suppose that, that would be in the Teck manual right?  Any Suggestions as to how to verify this?

oh yeah next time i am going to be Soooooppper carefull wile pressing the seals in

thank you

I suppose one way to look at it is that you will be getting a constant gear oil change, and when it stopps dripping you know it's time to fill 'er up :hammer:  :smack:

:funny:  LOL just what i needed on a tuesday afternoon at work.  I could also just attach a large jug of gear oil upsidedown from under my chassis with a regulated drip tube leading into the top of the axle housing case breather. :smack:

That would work...you could also rig up some sort of gear oil catcher (kinda like the dung bags on the back of horses) and recycle your gear oil. That way you could say your helping the environment :smack:
