I made a little platform to elevate the dry foods a couple inches.  The platform covers about half the area so the dry food gets stacked on top and the sodas and OJ cartons get placed on the floor of the ice chest.  Just gotta remember to empty some of the water after a couple days, especially if another bag of ice is thrown in later.

So, just wondering what everyone does to prevent their food and such from becoming a submarine in the water in the bottom of the cooler. I just finished a 10 day camping trip, and it seemed that everything was submerged :wall:. Obviously didn't bother the beer much, but the fresh food got a bit soggy  :rain:.

What kinda tricks to people have to prevent this? Anything? We tried the little basket thing, which sort-of works. Zip-lock bags are better than nothing, but what else is there? Do I have to pay $$$ for an electric cooler?

Your thoughts?

Erik :usa:
try wrapping your cooler in foam rubber and duck tape and use block ice only, then leave the drain plug open

no,the foam rubber acts as extra insulation and slows down the melting process, and you leave the drain plug open to let out what ice does melt so there is no water in the cooler to make your food soggy. i guarantee that after 4 days of camping i still have ice left and dry food

I'm interested in the vacum sealing thingy-ma-bob. Where did you (whoever has one) get it, and what  should I look for?

I used to do the frozen water bottle trick, and it worked fairly well, but it took up too much room. Need all the space i can get for my :beerchug:

Thanks for all your input.

I got my vacuum sealer thingamabob at Sams Club, but you can get them at Walmart too. Probably most stores like that now. The one I have is called Food Saver. They are new and improved (and much larger) then when I got mine. I think they run around $100. I love it.

Put the ice on the top shelf that way it will work better. Heat rises and cold falls.  That should be good for about 40* if you don't open it.

That's the way an ice box was before we had mechanical refrigeration. don't you remmember having a block of ice delivered every couple days?

If you drain the water off the cooler as it melts, the inside will actually stay colder.  I usually stick my cooler, open, in the chest freezer when I start to pack.  When I get to the food I pack it in ziplocs or vacuseal bags and put it in the cooler then the ice on top of it.  If it doesn't need refrigeration it goes in a box (a lot of people seem to think a cooler is for everything). I also leave frozen anything I'm not going to eat on day 1.  Then on-site I try to keep the cooler in the shade and drain the water at least twice a day and if possible make a run for more ice at some point.  I've taken fish out of the river on Saturday, buried the filets under the ice and had them freeze in the cooler in four days of sitting there.  The cooler's a nothing special Coleman that's about 10 years beat.  Serious though - get rid of the water as the ice melts, the cooler will stay colder.

wghen we go camping, my mom packs all the foodstuff that doesn need to be cold in boxes and bags, and freezes, and ziplocks all the stuff that needs to be cold.  A fire will thaw stuff out real well, just lean the meat in the plastic bags against a peice of wood with the meat next to the firering.

A friends dad used to wash everything he put in the cooler, and the inside of the cooler, then they'd used the melted icewater as drinking water. (he took out the drain plug, and put in a plug from a watwer cooler
