thanks guys for your help on the previuos posts. i was stumped at the cone washers..never seen or worked with those before. but now i have it broken down and it doesnt look good. the locking nut twisted off by hand with about two turns. the outer axle ,or the birfield if im not mistaken, is sliding out away from the truck about a half of an inch. before i broke this apart the axle hub had enough play in it to grind agianst the caliper. im wondering how deep this project can get and if anyone has had a similar dilema and what they did about it? i was hoping not to get into the knuckle and just replace the seals and bearings ? but it may be more. thanks agian for helping out this newbie.

you'll need a Wheel Bearing Kit http://www.marlincrawler.com/axleparts.html

or the knuckle service kit w/wheel bearing

if the hub move enough to come in contact with the caliper it needs new bearing really fast, it can get ugly.
