We had Skinny's front dampner off so I took pictures (with my crummy camera) to show you unbelievers the "front pulley" as some of you guys call it really is a dampner/harmonic balancer. Note the dental pick buried in the rubber layer sandwiched between the metal.

Why buy a new one?  The rubber isnt coming out which would indicate a bad balancer and being poked with a dental pick sure as hell isnt going to hurt it any.

Well  what you don't see is under  that layer of rubber  is a highly  sophisticated    grid of  electromagnetic wires    that send out a pulse  to the flux accumulator  every time the engine turns a revolution.  Thus charging the flux capacitor    and we all know  if your flux capacitor is not chargeing  your muffler barrings will shrink.

I didn't know toyota's had muffler bearings.  It that why my truck runs shitty?  Do i need new muffler bearings?  Where to they go?

Thank you for posting pics, Prismo.  I went through this months ago with these guys, but I don't have a camera to prove that is is a balancer/dampener, not just a pulley.

Aw cmon WT, it's not like you don't never work on anything......wait a sec....that's a double negative....so I guess it's true, cause it seems like you're always workin on something......And who's the guy with 4 parts trucks, buyers lined up for parts of them and 2 he hasn't aquired yet and never actually does anything with them.  Guess that'd be me, guess I never actually work on anything!!

i know that sure doesn't look like my front pulley.  mine has holes in it and is a chunk of cast/forged steel.

Since we're on the subject:

Anyone ever seen one where rubber damper has broken and allowed the inner/outer pieces of the pulley to spin?  A customer bought their truck into work a while back, and could'nt get it to run after doing his own timing chain.  Dude lined everything up thinking the crank was at 0* when it was at like 25*.   Took a little while to figure that one out...

From what Ive seen the early setups used a straight up pulley.  Starting with the second gen (re) Ive noticed them using a true balancer.

I see the ones that come apart every once in a while at work.  They make a light chirping noise with the engine running and the engine does run rougher when the rubber is split.  It's kinda funny to watch the timing mark jump all over when you have a timing light on it.  I've never heard of anyone doing their own timing chain and not notice that their front pulley was in two pieces, but could see were this would case a major problem.  Tell me this dumb arse bent all his valves. Glen- I've no idea when the went from a steel pulley to a damper...but my 84 has a damper on it from the factory.  I'd GUESS that the damper was added when things switched over from 20 to 22R engines.
