a few motor questions.
« on: Aug 04, 2005, 08:43:09 PM »
k im getting an fj40 with the 3 speed tranny and a blown 2f inline 6.  i have an fj60 with a running 2f in it. i want my fj60 to be my offroad only vehicle and my fj40 to be street legal and tow my fj60 and occasionaly see the trails.     my question is  should i put the 3 speed into my fj 60 and the 2f with a 4 speed into the fj40?   oh and im gonna put a 350 with the 3 speed.  would a 3 speed make a better offroading tranny.

Are you serious?  First off, 40's make shitty tow vehicles- the wheelbase is to short to tow much of anything.  Secondly, a 40 will out wheel a 60 anyday.  Third, that 60 will weigh quite a bit more than the 40.  Fourth, don't ruin a perfectly good FJ40 by stuffing a stupid 350 into it.  Call me a jerk or whatever, but I think you should keep it TOYOTA.  Do something original- anybody can put in a 350 in a 40.

The tranny you want is a 4 speed SM465- they've got a stupid low 1st gear that is great for crawling.  For on road use, you want a H55F tranny (overseas market 5speed) in the 40.  On the 60, you can just put in a later model FJ62 5speed trans.

Well, you could still put a manual SM465 into that FJ60 and have a low 1st.    Lets see some pics of the 60...dont get to see too many of those built up.

yeah, screw the 350, put a 427 in there.  once you work out the cooling issues, you're left with a motor with a couple times as much torque as the 2F and less weight :gap:

don't get me wrong, i love toy motors, but the F/2F are boat anchors in my opinion.  also, they're pretty much a chevy stovebolt 6 anyhow, not totally toyota-developed.  but then again, 350/smallblock swaps are waaaay overdone too.

hell, i'd put a ford engine in there...392 windsor sounds about right...

well i was just told the 350 and bell housing would bolt up to the toyota 3 speed im tryin to keep it as simple as i can because im a newbie at 4 byin and wrenchin. ill look into it though see how hard it would be to put a ford motor in it.    oh and pics r on the way.

And learn how to resize a picture...

FJ60 with 350 = tow rig
FJ40 with 2f and propane conversion = trail rig
PERIOD

i could build them both into trail rigs the fj60 is beat to hell allready thats why i wanted it for my trail rig and itd cost way to much for me to try and make it street legal. im gettin a beefed up ford f100 with a 390 in it i could use that as my trailor puller.   im still askin though would the 350 be a good offroadin motor with a toyota 3 speed would it be able to play in the mud and climb occasionally. all we have here is atv trails. in the process of making my own rock trails though right  by the river.
