Grab Handles
« on: Jul 31, 2005, 12:45:42 PM »
My truck is NON SR5 89 x-cab. Need to install some grab handles to get into el trucko. Any suggestions? I'm thinking factory SR5 handles; do these just screw into the plastic or is there some hidden metal plate that holds them better? Any ideas? WT? Kyota? Thanks!

Best regards,
Fred

I just added a grab handle on the driverside of my (SR5) 84 x-cab.  On my truck there is are nuts that are welded on the frame rail that the handle screws into...totally strong.  I go for factory add-ons when available.  I got my handle from California Mini Trucks.  You can call and talk to Troy at (909) 622-1381.  He knows just about everything...

Thanks nowhitefenders,
exactly what I was looking for. So, there are hidden metal brackets behind all the plastic crap? If this is the case, then a bolt on affair it is!

I pushed on the headliner in the spot where the holes for the screws should be and found out their exact location.  I peeled the headliner back to verify that there was a nut welded on there.   Then I used the passenger side handle and screws to verify that it fit and worked.  Although we have different year trucks, I bet its all the same.  Hope that helps.

Just put an interior cage in and you'll have a sturdy place to grab

I haven't tried it in my 90 yet, but my 84 had the factory grab handle holes on the driver's side.  They are there because the truck was built for the possibility of right hand drive.
