Who's using a one piece driveline on an Extra Cab.
« on: Jul 25, 2005, 10:53:03 PM »
Are any of you running a one piece driveline instead of a two peice
on an extra cab Toyota.
I'm thinking seriously of doing this as I am fed up with the Probloms
associated with the CSB and Double Cardan Joint.
Pics would be a big plus.
Thanks in advance

No pics but Im running a 94 CV and .188? DOM tubing on the rear driveline with no problems.  The 2 piece have nasty vibration issues and an expensive bearing to replace when it goes out.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

doing the same as WT.  93 cv, .188 wall, w/16 spline 1.5" stub/slip yoke.  No problems.  Angles are mild due to the 65" length.  (dual cases too.  shaft would be even longer with a single case)

Not an extra cab but my lwb standard cab has a single driveshaft, should be the same wb I just have a seven foot bed instead of a six. I could shoot you a pic tommorrow when I get off work but if you looked at a standard bed-regular cab that's what my ds looks like, just longer.

2 1/2x.188" tubing.

I'm leaving my 2 piece. Seems to sit a little higher. But it does suck having to pay 130 bucks for a new center bearring!!!   Plus I'm to lazy to build another shaft!!!

got mine from High-angle driveline.  Do you alread have dual cases?  I have a 65" all-toyota shaft w/ cv laying in the garage.  It's the one I used before I swapped in a 14 bolt.

There should be no difference in height between a one and two piece shaft.  That is, if the two piece shaft is setup correctly.  The two piece shaft with carrier bearing is designed to be in a straight line, meaning no angles at the carrier bearing.  When you lift the truck, it induces an angle at the carrier, which leads to vibrations and damaging the carrier.  So, if your one piece shaft is a straight line, and your two piece is installed correctly and is also in a stright line, there should be no height differences between the two.

To correct the angle at the carrier, try shimming the carrier down further.

I had my street driveline built for me from a shop in Sacromento.  Replaced the 2 piece with a one piece.  I then built my own trail driveline out of 2 3/4? .250 wall.  It vibrates above 35mph but it is just a trail one.  It takes the hits and keeps on ticken.  Deffanatly a good choice to switch to a one piece.

Since I only have about 3 inches of lift (lot of trimming) I felt there was no need for shimming the bearring. Though you are right, it does need to be shimmed to keep the angle correct. Plus the only time I drive it is when I'm headed to the trail. I only clocked 1900 miles in 14 months!!
