Tranny drop w/ floor jack?? Possible?
« on: Jul 25, 2005, 12:37:19 PM »
I've got everything i need to do my clutch, accept for a transmission jack. Anybody have any ideas or experience dropping and stabbing a tranny without a tranny jack?

Thanks

My friend used ratchet straps through the shifter holes to an internal cage.  If you don't have a cage then maybe you can find something else to strap to.  Also the floor jack came in handy.

Completely possible.  Lol.  Heck, I've even used cardboard boxes and let the tranny drop.   :yikes:

the only thing I've ever used was a floor jack. I normally have to put a  piece of 4x6 on top of the jack though.

I've pulled and installed a few tranny's with a floor-jack and a few well placed straps by myself.

I dont recommend this, but I just bench pressed the tranny up and into its home  every time, of course only when the truck is on the ground, not up on a lift. Its not at all a wise move though! If you cannot get the splines to line up, you will end up with a transmisssion on your face. (dont ask)    :muscles:

Just use the floor jack and a couple buddies to help stabalize the tranny on the jack.  Worked good for me.

Here's a little trick I've used....find all thread that fits the holes on the block, after removing the bolts screw them in. It helps to center the tranny while you are installing it.   Oh, they only have to be about 6 inches long.  My 79 Blazer use to eat flex plates all the time found that this method allowed me to pull the trans and t-case back far enough to replace the flex plate without dropping the trans!!!

HF sells an adapter that bolts to a floor jack for just this purpose.  Not exactly necessary, but it does help maneuver things around without the tranny trying to roll off the jack.  Took a look on their site to try to post a picture and give you a part number, but their site sucks for searching.

it looks just like a floor jack with a plate and a couple vertical pieces tacked on to keep the tranny from rolling around. Me and my dad sweated cursed and grunted putting my new w56 in. Decided to put tranny and t-case in as a whole. too much weight off balance to control. Wont do that again. Come out in two parts, it will go in like that

Thanks for all the info.....I did'nt think this post would still be alive, lol. I already got my clutch in and started up on the next mission. We left the transfer case AND the crossmember on....And more or less dropped it with a floor jack and various blocks and whatnot.  Getting it back up took a while because my dad wanted to try everything before letting me benchpress the bellhousing into place. But, once i crawled under there and convinced him that i'd be fine, it went like butter. The peice of pipe we placed in between the leaf springs acted like a safety net, or a resting bar.....so no cracked ribs . I did drop a wrench on my face earlier tho and chipped a little peice of tooth off :gap:.
Next time it should go a lot smoother.
