Revolver shackles??????

ok, has anyone installed revolver shackles?  and if so, how do they handle on the highway?  i think the concept is a good one but  :smack:what would happen when i hook to a trailer :ack:and take off down a winding road .   am  i going to wake up in the hospital??

I have then on my cruiser, they work good and no problem on the road. There is anpther brand out there that has a locking strap so the won't open. They look more beefy too. Sorry, I do not know who makes em though.

I have a set of downey cantilevers on  the back of my 83 truck.  love them, they're built to last, and I haven't had any problems at all, handling is improved (highway and off.)

i didnt even know downey had them.  these "cantilevers" are a revolver type shackle??

I have some on my 85. Havent had any problems with them but i done tow with the truck. I have had to do a couple of panic stops and they havent unloaded at all.. well good luck on your quest.

Yeah!  Downey makes some cantilever shackles.  They don't look anything like the revolvers.  But they are built strong, rebuildable and fully user friendly.

They lack a little  of the side twisting that revolvers have, but they do have some nice built in anti-camming studs for over extension and under extension, I think they will let me droop on their own about 12 inches, not counting the springs own droop.  The limiting factor right now is the shocks.

I havent' had any problems with control or breaking with these guys, also added bonus is that washboard roads completely vanish under the springs.  

The only drawback I've heard is that they could prematurely wear out your springs.  No biggy in my department since I'm running cheap Downey springs anyway.  In fact I like them so much I'm gonna see about fitting them up front.

hmmm well those downey guys seem to really know there stuff,  i havent seen those cantilevers anywhere.
 i think those revolvers would be great as far as stressing the springs but i dont think i would want them on the front, just the back,

I have revolvers in the front on my 85 pickup and they work just fine.

I posted a while back somewhere about driving Curt Hildebrants truck with his latest creation on it. If anyone has a Petersons 4wheel mag with the shacle roundup in it. I think page 92. There is a pic of these things. No news on price yet.

You know we already had a disscussion about these types of shackles but I can not seem to find it maybe someone deleted the whole post

I have never used them but from what I have gathered, they work well for large drop offs and lose dirt. But when you get on really grippy surfaces, like at Moab, I have heard that when the suspension loads up, the shackles dont like it and snap the axle allowing wrap and the wheel "jumps" and the whole truck hops and its really annoying.

So I guess its great for trails with big rocks and huge drop offs, like Rubicon, but not to great on really sticky rocks like at Moab.

i have a set on my 85 toy and they work great i have towed with them and also panic stopped and have had no problems. they havent unloaded except under articulation on the trail and i have gotten about 11 inchs or so more droop. they seem to work fine i have had them for about 2 years and am completly satisfied with there performance.
