FJ40 power steering
« on: Nov 17, 2002, 08:32:34 AM »
I want to run power steering on my 71 cruiser. Looking for suggestions on what to run and any experiences  with any of the set ups.

Saginaw, 4 turn, big bore, large input shaft size, variable. The plate for the frame can be made easy but the measurements are what you really pay for when buying them. They can be had fairly cheap. Do not forget to box in the opposite side of the frame when you do it. Also support/add material under the hole you drill through the frame. It WILL crack there eventually. IH8MUD.com should have good info on the conversion and sources for the plates. I got mine from BTB ages ago. and there may be cheaper out there :dunno:

not the best view but

If you are or ever will be SOA, then the GM Saginaw is the ticket.

If you are running 4" lift springs and don't EVER intend to change from that, then Scout Saginaw is great, regardless of tire size.

If you want it to look stockish and plan on 33" or less tires, then the minitruck conversion is the ticket.

ALL of these and more are written up on my site somewhere - hit the tech links.

If Mini trucks can run 35+ inch tires with there PS set up why can't you do it on a Cruiser? is it becuase you start hitting the drag link when you turn and articulate???  Also if you go SOA why can't you run the Mini Truck IFS and get Highsteer that way?

33" tires will hit the relay rod between the PS box and the center arm, regardless if you run stock or minitruck converted.  Easy way to take out sidewalls, and 35's make it worse.

I believe you are confusing minitruck hi-steer with IFS (Independant Front Suspension)

Either way, keeping the center arm in the steering setup, either stock FJ40 PS or minitruck converted FJ40 PS...that center arm adds one more slop point in the system and one more link to keep maintenance on.  More links = more potential slop.

Yes, not only does it retain all the steering rods but it is not powerful enough to turn bigger tires.
