Sounds like your radiator is going away. The fan is totally out of the picture when your going that fast.  you can get a radiator from www.radiatorbarn.com for $112 shipped to your door for a 3 core heavy duty one. ;)

LOL  yea that should be a sign....  If you fan clutch is in good shape ie it doesnt spin forever and you've changed the thermostat in the last decade your radiator is gone.  Save your $$ fromt he fan buy and get the 3 core rad.  Its a bolt in deal.

A stock fan clutch will work the best on a properly functioning system.  I ran one of those flex a lite toyota fans on my truck and like white trash said, all I got was overheating issues.  Also keep in mind that in an 82, the stock alternator is what, a 40 amp?  Running a fan that pulls 20?  Thats only 20 amps left over to run the truck, forget about running the headlamps and the heater blower. . .

Along the same line, what you horsepower you gain by removing the stock fan and clutch you lose by having to drive the alternator harder.

I wouldn't even think about a flex fan...they are designed to have the blades flatten out at higher RPM, thus reducing drag and increasing HP, however slightly.  In a 4x4(think gear reduction), you might be at 3500 RPM, yet only moving 2MPH, which is not enough to cool the engine while running a flex fan.

my buddy put one on his 83 22r pickup, it added about 5-7 hp, not that you can really feel it, but anything helps. he used a flex-a-lite fan, it was about 200 dollars i think

Can't just run a ford taurus fan? I got one for $25 from the junkyard I used to have that setup in my 93 runnah. Worked good but you would have to watch the manual cut off switch.
I had problems remembering to turn it back on.
The downside I had to upgrade my alternator to at least a 105 amp one.
I think on low fan which is all I had to use it drew like 35 amps.
I used a 40 amp relay and a manual adjustable temp switch to turn it on and off with a override switch to turn it off for water crossings and stuff.

I put a flex-a-lite Black Magic electric fan on my 92.  It has a 22RE.  The fan works fine.  I noticed a little bit of an increase in power, but not too much...  I think the money would have been better spent on a header.

I ran a black magic electric fan over 6K miles and never had any heating problems. I did however, break 4 of the blades off when I went through some mud so I'll never run one again. You can't replace the blades either so now I had a spare motor if anyone wants to buy it off me.

Yeah, there are difinately other things that would be worth the money before an electric fan. On the other hand, if you can get one for free, it wouldn't be a bad idea to rig it up. I always carried a spare stock fan which I did end up needing. Anyway, in summary, don't spend money on it, if you're having heating problems get a three row turbo radiator first.

One of the biggest reason's I went with an electric is because of a 3inch body lift.Rather than trying to relocate the rad I just put one on I had laying around. It came off a taurus I think, got it from a friend for nothing.
