If I buy this 81 toy that won't pass smog (should after a few new parts) can I still regestier it to my name?

DMV makes it sound on their website that you have to have smog papers when you go in to change ownership.

I've only bought 1 vehicle and it is a 73 so I didn't have to worry about this.

you dont need to have a smog certificate in order to register it, I waited like a month and a hlaf to get mine smogged. You will only need it to bring the registration up to date etc...

What dirtman said.  I just did this with my 83, Transferred title paid fees and got a temp sticker til I got it smogged.  Even if you dont smog it for a while and the temp expires you can still drive it because the fees are paid, if you get stopped your plate will come back as RIP registration in progress and you should be left alone. By the way I ended up replacing just about every emissions related part, cost mucho $$$ original estimate was $300 it ended up being double that with a cat, carb,EGR, and multiple tests. Good luck man!

Unless otherwise determined in the sale, the seller is responsible for smogging a vehicle.  If you buy it with you having to smog it, you should talk the guy down a bit.
