Serious Tranny Problems!!!

My 1985 4x4 pickup, Toyota of course, doesn't like first or third gear.  I put it in the first gear position, and let the clutch out, and nothing happens except a light grinding noise from within the tranny.  As far as third gear goes, it feels like it goes into the gates, but as soon as the clutch is let out, it just pops out of gear.  Second and fourth gear feel like they go way further than they need to.  Is there a way to adjust the shift linkage within the tranny so that 1st and 3rd get locked in better and to take up the extra slack in the second and fourth gear spots?  Thanks for any help, it's greatly appriciated.

Best call marlin for a trans rebuild or exchange..Though I have never had that problem,,I have talked to others that have and it usally means  :~~: trans...

That is an internal problem, probably very worn/stripped syncros are allowing the blocking ring to move further than it is supposed to and preventing engagement. Also it sounds like first and third gear may be dead.  Without a doubt it is time for a rebuild.  I would also recomend Marlin for the task if they are taking tranny work.  I do gear work and in fact recently rebuilt a trans for a guy in your area with a red 85 4runner (you might recognise the truck it is rather large) I could rebuild it for you and put in touch with him  for a recomendation, if that would be helpful.

I would recomend that you replace all bearings syncros seals and any failed/failing gears, while the case is open since a large portion of the rebuild cost is labor it doesnt cost that much more to be thorough in part replacement but it does cost alot to go into the trans twice (a second time to replace parts that could have been taken care of the first time).

Hey that helps alot.  How much would you charge to rebuild my tranny?  I want to do it right, but I don't have a whole lot of money at my disposal.  As far as gferris5 goes, I think I'll stick with my 3 outta 5, less work!  Thanks again guys.  Let me know as soon as possible about that rebuild.  Thanks again.

Your mainshaft bearing is wasted and is allowing the mainshaft to "walk" latterally under torque. This has a direct effect on 1st and 3rd gear only. 2nd and 4th gear feeling loose just sounds like a worn socket on the shift handle. Easy to fix, but the trannys toast so dont bother.

Im betting your 85' is a 22R (non-EFI) and your tranny is a G52. Marlin rebuilds those for $649- He does many tricks that he has developed that not even the factory does. His trannys will outlast anyone's in the world. I'll put money on it.

that's what i was thinking as well.  i just rebuilt the shifter socket stuff on my wifes 83 it's a snap.  and the parts are way cheap from the dealer.  

i had it done in about 20 minutes.  some of that was running back and forth to the shop for different tools.  ended up that a pair of those spreader pliers,(don't know the real name), worked perfect to turn the steel cap to release the shifter.  i was amazed how easy it all was.
