calling diff guys: stock 4.88s
« on: May 15, 2005, 09:19:26 PM »
today i picked up a 4.88 chunk from a '93 4runner for $250.  now, i know this one has the b*std 3rd member housing with wierd carrier offset(so it has a thin ring gear and a BURLY looking pinion, much bigger than my 4.37s) but this is where i get fuzzy with it.  i've heard conflicting reports of not being able to run a locker in it, while others say you can.  the carrier looks like a standard split V6 carrier.

my question:  am i going to be able to install a lockrite in it without any trouble?  hopefully yes, but it's no loss if i can't -- i'll just throw it in the front(or rear, depending where i stick the locker)

well, looking around on pirate, i saw a comparison between factory 4.88s and a normal v6 third with 4.88s.  the factory setup looks stronger -- the ring gear on the normal v6 third is THICK!  which makes the pinion a lot smaller.

however, the more important thing in the picture was that the factory setup had a spool installed!  so i'm guessing it is possible.  the nice thing about the V6 3rd is that lockrites are cheap!  $198!

WELD IT!

Search a bit more on Pirate. IIRC, I read you can run a Detroit but for some reaso an ARB won't work in it. Be sure to search a bit before dropping the coin, I know there is some variance.

Kyle do yourself a favor and stay away from a lockright in the rear of your rig.  They are clanking banging unloading sunzubiotches!  I love my lockright in the front of my truck, I put one in the rear of a buddies truck at the same time as my install.  I told him to weld the rear and put the locker in the front but he was like you, he was concerned with tire wear etc.  3 days later he called me to ask when I could help him put it in the front and weld the rear.

But it all comes down to you, put the locker in the rear and drive it for a few days.  If you can live with it great if not it will work great in the front.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

wouldn't be much of a big deal to put a lockrite in my front axle.  this truck's only going to run 33" tires(so i have an excuse to get lift springs, to be able to ditch my push pull steering), so i figure it might not be *that* bad.

sure, ARB or electric may be the way to go but i'm not gonna get that fancy i think.  maybe i'll just run the V6 third open in the rear, and have my spare(blown R&P) diff regeared with a aussie or something and run it up front

yep most 2nd gen 4runners with the 31" tire package, V6 and an auto from '91 or '92-95 got 4.88s...they have a G144 axle code

To answer your question, yes you can run a locker in the factory 4.88 dif.  Not sure about a full detroit but I know you can run a lunch box locker. Ive had a "Quick Lok" in the rear for about 6 months or so now. No problems so far.

Just for the sake of accuracy, yes you can run an ARB locker in the factory 4.88.

Kyle, search around on 4x4wire, I think there were a couple threads about it.

sounds cool...i might just leave it open in the rear and have my front regeared to 4.88 and aussied, so i can unlock the hubs for less tire wear/better road manners.
