I'm going welded front and rear for now. I'll eventually go for an Aussie locker in the rear. As far as gears, I won't do that until I get 36" rubber and Smirfields. With the dual adapter and 4.7 in the rear with 4.11 diffs, I'll be at a crawl ratio at about 178:1. Not bad for now, it'll do me until I get more $$$.

True but your clutch isn't gonna like it much on the road...

Naw, it's not bad right now. I've been running 33"x12.5"s for a year now at that ratio, it's not bad at all. I don't have to ride on my clutch to get going, but I do go through more gas trying to get up to speed. I haven't got all that much weight on there yet for it to be bad, not til I get some armor on anyway... :s

Yup had the Mud Kings XT's at one time too.

I know a guy who owns a propane place that owns about 6 running samuari's some setup for wheeling some stock.
He has a few parts sami's too. He always seems to have one up on blocks like your friend does everytime I go over and visit.

I am trying to see if he will cut me a deal on forklift tank refills so i can do a propane conversion.

Finally got my shocks: Pro Comp 34" front's / 36" rear's. :eyebrow:

Rear's are longer because I will eventually put in a 3/4 elliptical set up.

Then I pulled my dirty Sanchez stock t-case, pressure washed it off, and stripped it down to the gear reduction unit. :hammer: Gosh, I'm a messy worker. ::)

I decided I'm going to mimic All Pro's triple-piece-of-crap-cross-member and build myself one by adding onto my existing t-case e-brake.

The t-case ont he bottom right in the last pic is my 4.7 geared one I already pieced together.

Okay so time to mate it all up and uh oh, ran into a problem:

The hd snap ring isn't seating in the new main shaft...

Upon closer inspection, the oiling gap between the main shaft and main gear is 0.050", when it should be 0.010" and no more.

I wonder what the problem is :headscratch: ... So out it comes from the main bearing. Low and behold the 1/4" thrust washer ball bearing is preventing the shaft from sliding all the way in the main bearing. (I think the main shaft ball bearing seat was machined in the wrong spot, apparently 0.040" off.) A little grinding and I made the ball bearing look like a 65% pie. This allows the new main shaft to slide in enough for the hd snap ring to seat in the output end of the shaft, still keeps the thrust washer from moving around too much, and still has a little bit of play to it.

So once I got that figured out, measured the gap @ 0.004", time to move on. Bolted the adapter on with a touch of black berry jam, and then mated up the reduction box with my 23 spline 4.7:1 t-case. :drooling: Time to install it and build my cross member.

A HUGE thanks goes out to Marlin & Co. Your massive amounts of ingenuity and experience has brought a huge smile to my face. :yesnod:

Hey Man,

First off, I've gotta say that 1st gen's with factory sun roofs rule!

And second, I hope you got that Crawler together ok. I dont know if you called in for that bearing issue, but every now and then we get a coupler that is off, so we just modify it and use them for installs, which is perfectly fine, but it looks like you got one and I apologize for that! But going on how old this last post is before mine, I am sure you've got it all installed and are reaping the amazing rewards of CRAWLING!

i read that list of what you did to your truck and i think you should have welded the rear and put the aussie up front. hows that welded front carrier work for you on the road? however, that truck is definitley sexy. I   first gens.

Yeah I was close to putting the welded 3rd in the rear, but because its a daily driver I figured the Aussie in the rear will at least save the tires. I never have my fronts engaged on the road anyway (except to test it), and off road it works fine. I'm gonna need a cooler for my p/s tho, overheats after an hours use with both hubs locked. Oh just got the Aussie in last weekend, and I LOVES it. I love the click-click sound as I coast around corners. It's so quiet tho that I forget about it sometimes... Tis good I suppose.

Okay so where were we? Oh right, so I got my dual ultimate together, and now its time to install into my truck. I wrestle the duals onto my chest and I creep under my truck. Fpr the next hour or so I struggle to hold the t-cases in place while I bolt the now fairly heavy setup into place. Got er in afterall... Not much clearance to the body. I need a body lift so I can finish lifting my driveline...

For the cross member, I obviously didn't want to stick with the stock member. The rubber mounts suck ass for torquing over, and especially with the added torque from the duals, it would end up eating my engine mounts. So i wanted something that had enough leverage to keep the drive train from twisting. I was looking at FROR's crossmember but it looked to complicated to replicate, but when I saw AllPro's Triple Cross Member, I knew I could copy the general basics to it. So I grabbed some 3/8's x 3"bar and some DOM tubing and some 1/4"square tubing and got to work. I used some rubber bushing from my buddy Warren's rig, his Zuki, found some DOM that it fit snug inside, cut it to fit 4"square and made some mounts. Next I cut and welded some arms onto my Sky t-case E-brake bracket and voila! A new crossmember. Plenty strong, less stress on the drive train, and cheap.

I then welded on my brackets (note predrilled lift holes for drive train lift). Finally, I ground and clearanced 2x CV joints, drilled out all my flanges to 3/8"s holes, and built a front square tube drive shaft. I also took in a front CV shaft to Pat's Driveline in Langley, BC and got them to lengthen it to fit my rear axle. After that, I bolted everything together. Then I had some fun urban crawling, I mean testing out the new equipment... :driving:

Later I made some diff covers from an 8" weldable pipe cap. And I also built a skid plate from 3/16" plate and some stock rubber mounts. I also recently added in an Aussie locker. Me and my friend Warren went crawling up here in BC near Mission last weekend. We hit some trails called "The Can Opener"and "Six Feet Under". It might be slow, but its fun!!!

So thats where I've been for the past little while.

I'll still be around though. I still have some things to add like:

Traction bar.
Marlin 58" sliders.
F&R Bumpers.
Axle trusses.
Flat bed.
Roll cage.
Proper lighting.
36" rubber.
(Not necessarily in that order).

The list doesn't end does it? I swear it doesn't... :smack:

Oh there you are my long lost thread!!!

It's time to do some more modding on my junk. I'm slowly collecting parts again, and am just about ready to do... I think I'm on to phase #4, or maybe #5??? I've lost count. :headscratch: I've got some more modifications to complete before this coming season, and before I get nailed down planning a wedding in the summer. :yikes:

The more I wheel this thing, and the more I daily drive it, the more I want to trailer/buggy it. *sigh* :headshake:

The list is as follows, and not necessarily in this order:

#1. I've got to change the suspension a bit. Presently I am running a 6 pack of toy rears in front with a 2" drop hanger and 7" shackle eye to eye. The shackle is a bit much, especially with the pinion/caster angle. So I ordered up Sky's 5 1/2" boomerang shackles to stuff in there. Also, I will be trimming back my springs a couple inches each to gain some leverage support, as they are too long now. In the rear I am running a 4 pack of Tacoma rears mixed with 86 rears, and a 3 1/2" lift block. I want to rid of the lift block as much as possible and toss out the overloads, to soften up the back a bit. While I'm in the I am going to add in a traction bar, and some buggies made up of mixed front/Tacoma/early rears. That's right, 3/4 elliptical baby. :screwy:

#2. Flatbed. My box is dying from cancer too quickly, especially when they spray the roads with that calcium/salt mix. It eats to crap out of anything, painted or not. I'm gonna keep it simple, removeable, and within the framerails. Bolted on top directly behind my cab will be my tank bolted into a support/cage. Underneath my flatbed will be frame needing minor repairs and new crossmembers/shock mount. And of course, removeable mudflaps.

#3. Steering. Hydro-assist anyone? :eyebrow: Thanks to freds40 for pointing me in the right direction on that one. I have a '90 runner box already cleaned, drilled, tapped, and assembled waiting for a beefy pitman arm from Sky. I was also looking under the the front of my truck, and was inspecting where my ram was gonna be mounted, when I noticed that my bump stops had been crushed in a bit from cranking on the steering wheel too much. :smack: I should have boxed them in when I had the axle off the truck. Oh well. I'm gonna have to now anyway.

#4. Sliders. Nuff said.

Pics will follow in the next two weeks, after my sister leaves for the DR, Puerto Plata to be exact. Then I have free reign for three months to drive her car while my truck is in the shop.

That's it. All in due time. But the time for right now, is for me to go to bed. 5 AM comes waaaaaaay too early.

Also, received in the mail today... Sky's 3/4" less drop than stock IFS pitman arm with Chevy TRE taper! :eyebrow: Beefy for sure, and I'll never break it. I was always a little worried about the stock IFS PA's. Even though someone told me that I'd end up breaking the sector shaft long before the pitman arm, I still decided to upgrade while I was in there, instead of on the trail.
