Can you use a 2wd IFS steering box for crossover steering?
If not, why? I can't tell them apart.

You can, but that aren't as strong both inside the box and they only have 2 bolts instead of 3 if i am correct.

oddball

My 85 2wd has two bolts, the 4wd IFS box is larger in size also, I dont know if you could sustitute or not, the 2wd pitman arm is flatter than the 4wd so it would be good for xover clearance

It's not strong enough I have even seen the ears break off of 4x4 ifs boxes imagine what a 2x4 box would do

I haven't put my IFS box in yet...are the fittings the same as the stocker?
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Yes the fittings are the same, no need to change hoses at all.

A 2 wheel box still uses 3 bolts but one of them comes in from the top.  I have one Im thinking of using on another truck just to test how durable it is.  I would suspect that it is pretty strong since I have yet to hear of any desert running guys replacing/upgrading their steering boxe's.

Could be wrong here, but I think I remember hearing that the shaft is smaller diameter also, which is weaker. Not exactly sure, and don't have the time right now to look it up. I'll see if i can find something an post-up later.

The sector shaft is the same size it thats what your getting at.  You can actually swap the pitman arms back and forth once you grind a spline off the 4x sector shaft beings the 2x arm has a master spline.

LOL I may have workied on a couple of yota's in my past...  :gap:  I can see where the strength difference could be a worry though.  You wouldnt think that a 2x would have nearly the same strength in the steering system as a 4x.  But then you gotta think that yota's are rather overbuilt from the factory. ;)

I have done several 2wd to 4wd conversions, and each time i just used the stock 2wd power steering box...All of them have held up just fine, with no real noticable diffrence in steering as compared to a 4wd box....

So for the overall concensus, I would be able to pick up a 2wd steering box for crossover steering with no complications running 35's?

oddball

Im willing to try mine since its already on there,,,I was going by the size difference, the 4wd box being bigger but then It shouldnt make any difference because as WT says the sector shaft is the same size. I thought mine only had two bolts but I guess if you plate it then it would be fine,,,in theory

There is another bolt that goes in from the top directly above the framerail.
