Info on motor?

Got a buddy that just bought an 83 Sr5 but it has a 21R-U motor and it is a real dog I am tryin to help him out with the truck and am trying to get as much info for the kid as possible. I already know it has lower compression than a 22R but what else?

21R-U? I know there's a 21R that came in some cars butt never heard of one in a truck.
I think it had duel OHC. sure it's not a 20R? butt a 83 should have a 22R in it.

Japanese import motor
They came in:
1982 Celica, Camery, Corona
1982-85 Cresida

Japan only engine. Many of the used engine importers pimp this as the 22r replacement. I believe no 22r were used in Japan. Everyone I have ever talked to calls this engine a dog. I believe some replacement parts are hard to find also.
