Would a G52 be a direct replacement for a W56-C, the dimensions look similar but will a W56-C t-case work behind a G52. Would the shifters be arranged differently?

Everything will work ok except for the shift rods in your t/case. The early forward shifting models used "Long" forward shift rods (84-88), but when they came out with the forward shifting W56 in 1989, they redesigned the shift rods in the t/case to a slightly shorter design.

Everything will work, all you have to do is swap out the two shift rods and you are set
