whats an easy way to see if EGr is functioning properly? or is leaking?

You can easily check for proper EGR operation by briefly cracking the throttle open so the engine reaches 2,500 rpm or so. You should see the pintle move slightly.
Check for excessive carbon build-up as well.
If the motor is getting EGR when it is not desired, it can lean the mixture enough to induce a misfire (and rough idle) and effect the HC emissions

My truck does the rough idle thing, I am thinkin about tryin this, seeing how it works.  GOt it from pirate, that thread was really interesting, gave some good suggestions

For those wishing to bypass their 'functional' EGR valve, all you need to do is unhook one end of the vaccum line that actuates the diaphram, place a bee-bee or ball bearing in the vaccum line and then hook the vaccum line back up.

This method works great for those of us in states that have 'visual' emissions inspections. For all intents and purposes the EGR appears as if it is still present and functional.

And if the situation should arise where you need to reinstate the EGR to its former 'glory' all you need to do is trim back the vaccum line to free the ball bearing plug and hook the vaccum line back up.

an even more inconspicuous way would be to replace the EGR part of the intake gasket with a piece of beer can cut to shape

You can check an egr valve with a vacuum pump.  Or just hook it up to manifold vacuum.  If it kills the engine or at least makes it run rough, its working.  Putting a bb in the vacuum line to the egr won't help you cure a leaking egr(unless its the modulator that is beeding vacuum).  If its leaking that means the pintle valve is not seating, probably due to carbon buildup.

I'm thinking about blocking mine because I think anything that dumps black soot into my engine is a bad thing.  The inside of my intake looks worse than my bbq.
