Greetings All,

I am new here and hoping to find some help. I need to replace the engine in my Rocky. I live in the United States where they were only sold for three years, so finding parts is no fun. I would like to run some manner of Toyota four cylinder that hopefully will bolt up to the stock transmission without an adaptor but not opposed to using one. I do prefer to have EFI for many reasons. I hope to hear back from someone soon, and thanks in advance.

from a google search, looks like ai is taking over.

Because Daihatsu is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toyota and shared numerous parts, modifying a Rocky with a Toyota engine—like the 22R or 4Y—is a popular conversion for enthusiasts needing more power.
Swapping an engine into a Daihatsu Rocky is not a direct, bolt-in affair. Custom fabrication and specific modifications are required to properly secure the motor and ensure the rest of the drivetrain functions correctly. The Toyota 4Y and 22RE. Toyota 4Y: The 2.2L 4Y (found in older Hilux models and forklifts) is a frequent choice, as some Rocky owners even find their 4x4s already have one swapped in. It is an ultra-reliable, torque-heavy engine. Toyota 22R/22RE: The 2.4L 22R block shares similar mounting traits, and some owners report that 22R engine mounts can line up cleanly within the Rocky chassis.
Adapters & Bellhousings: Because the Rocky's transmission and transfer case are unique, you will typically need a custom bellhousing adapter to mate the Toyota block to the Daihatsu Rocky transmission. Alternatively, many enthusiasts opt to swap the entire Toyota transmission and transfer case (such as the W56 or G52) alongside the engine to make everything line up.
Drivetrain and Axle Considerations If you retain the Rocky transmission, you will be working with unique 5.29 differential gearing. If you swap the entire drivetrain to a Toyota setup, you must ensure the axle ratios match what the transmission requires. To resolve this, many builders perform a Solid Axle Swap (SAS) using 1979–1985 Toyota truck axles.

edit
There is no commercially manufactured off-the-shelf adapter to mate a Toyota 22R engine to a Daihatsu Rocky transmission. Because the Rocky uses a proprietary Daihatsu/Toyota-hybrid transmission design, executing this specific engine swap requires a mix of custom fabrication, a custom-machined adapter plate, and a modified pilot bearing/clutch setup. For a visual breakdown of how custom engine-to-transmission swaps are fitted and aligned when factory kits don't exist:11:14DIY Engine Adapter Plate (Mate any ...Scantron's GarageYouTube · Jan 26, 2023Key Rocky Swap ChallengesBolt Patterns: The 22R block and Daihatsu transmission bellhousing have completely incompatible mounting patterns.Input Shaft: The Rocky input shaft length and spline count do not match a stock Toyota 22R clutch disc, requiring a custom or hybridized clutch setup.Electronics & Fuel: If you are mating to a 22R (carbureted), you will need a standalone fuel pump, though a 22RE (fuel injected) might share some ECU/wiring features with the later Rocky.Viable AlternativesMany enthusiasts looking to upgrade a Daihatsu Rocky drivetrain bypass adapting a 22R to the weak factory transmission entirely. Instead, they opt to swap both the engine and the transmission over to a Toyota W-series transmission (like a W56) which easily bolts right up to the 22R.
