Dude

Hey all,

Trying to wrap my head around installing a dual case on my 04 Tacoma. I am looking at the kits from trail gear with and without the mini crawl box.

Question one: what is the mini crawl box?

Question two: can I use an oem t-case and turn that into a crawl box?

Questioning because I recently picked up a stock t-case from a buddy for free and was wondering if I can do such a thing.

Thanks for the help!

Hey dude,

Don't mean to sway you but I would personally steer clear of buying Marlin Crawler or Trail gear crawl box. They're not worth the investment. To stay on the cheaper side, NWF Eco-Crawler is a better choice IMHO. Looking at the price point of a MC/TG mini crawl box, I would opt for the strength of an Atlas 2-speed or 4-speed if money isn't a problem.

1) A mini crawl box refers to mini truck gear driven RF1A case (top shift or forward shift) found on the early 4 cylinder.

2) You cannot use a second Tacoma transfer case as a dual case unless you're running NorthWestFab eco-crawler VF2. Even that, you're using the 2.57:1 internals and not the VF housing itself. See link below. If that's the question. If you're referring to a mini crawl box setup, in order to set up a dual case setup in your first gen Tacoma, you'll need to split your transmission and transfer case apart. Install an adapter that will bolt to the transmission and allows a gear driven RF1A case to be mounted behind that adapter. In the first case, you can run 2.28:1 (factory gear driven ratio) or 4.7:1 (crawl gear ratio). A second adapter must be use to bolt being the RF1A case to allow the user to bolt their original VF case to it. That will be the dual case setup, using a gear driven case in front the original chain driven Tacoma case.
