I have a 1989 4 Runner 4wd with a 3.0 liter V6. I have a 300+ HP turbo charged 22RE motor with stand alone engine management that i would like to swap into my 4 Runner. The current V6 trans is shot. I am disputing putting a manual trans behind the motor as that is what is currently behind it, or installing a new or different automatic trans. I am running into some confusion as to what I should use as a replacement. Also, would like to keep the 4wd and need to know if my current transfer case will work on whatever trans is recommended.

I have talked to some folks, and they recommended using the R150F if I wanted to go automatic, or the R151F if i wanted to convert the truck to manual. I'm OK with either but im looking to maintain the truck as much as a stock vehicle, not an offroad vehicle, more as a restomod with a nice little lift, little bigger tires, but some nice horsepower. I just need to know what transfer case would work in this application or if the stock one will hold up to 300 hp street driving with the occasional use in 4wd. This truck will never see mud.

Another thing to think about is the stand alone engine management. Not sure how this will affect the trans computer and if there is a way to bypass all that.

The guys I talked to said you would be the ones to ask all these questions, so I would appreciate any help you could provide.

Thanks.

I would be more inclined to go with the manual transmission as the auto uses a chain drive transfer case as I remember.

Tell us more about the motor, how are you pushing 300hp on a 22RE? Sounds cool

The R150F is a manual trans, it is the one that is in the Runner now.  You need the R151F if you want a manual with the built 22re, the R151F is the 5spd trans that came with the turbo 22re.  You will also need a 23 spline transfercase if you want to keep it 4wd.  You could run a stock 22r 5spd manual trans and t-case, providing you use the power of the built 22re turbo wisely, i.e., never hammer down the throttle.

For automatic, the only one is the 4spd A340f, which between it and the weight, a lot of that 300HP wont ever be seen performance wise.

If you want to be able to beat on the rig performance wise, can't locate an R151F or don't want to drop the money on one and the T-case, you could go with a W58 trans out of a 1986-1992 non turbo Toyota Supra, think all you have to do is swap the bell housing.  The Supra W58 was built for the 200HP 196ftlbs output from the 7mge.  There are builds here where members put the 7m in their trucks, and reused their stock trans and t-cases, those build posts should give you an idea of what you need to bolt them together.
