22RE/RTE Clutch Compatibility Questions.
« on: Apr 12, 2022, 10:22:55 AM »
Have a 1990 4runner 4x4 that was born with an auto and had a 5mt swapped in. trans is unknown, existing clutch is unknown. Truck is in getting a tune after 22RE turbo motor installed. Expectation is around 200hp or less- not a great deal but beter perf than the old 22RE/auto slug. Assuming the clutch is proper for the year I am also expecting trouble in this area and looking forward to ordering up a replacement. I'm easy on clutches and this will be a 70/30 on off road ratio. No HD wheeling.
- assuming the turbo/1995 flywheel will be used- what can I use for the clutch/PP?
CKT 037, turbo spec
CKT 049 1995 spec
CKT 048 Supra
CKT 036 Supra
I haven't read much about the damper material- any issues with Asco rubber? Is more dampers better 4 vs 5 vs 6? How does Sachs and Exedy stack up to Asco?

Hey dfarr67,

I would not install a CenterForce or feramic.

I’d go with a heavy duty pressure plate and new clutch slave cylinder.

I prefer the springs to the rubber for obvious reasons.

Whether you are putting out 90 horsepower or 200 horsepower, it does not take any special skill to stupidly smoke a clutch.

Not wanting to have to prematurely drop a tranny, I'd spend a little extra on the clutch disc and pressure plate - there's plenty of good choices.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
To date I haven't replaced a clutch due to my driving habits, may have replaced one or two on a newly purchased vehicle. 4x4's just make it that much more painful. As far as the niche clutches, besides obvious cost- they sacrifice a lot for what they are aimed at. If the basic oe supplied hardware has given no problems to most of the operators that is the direction I usually go- or a known mixture.
It was suggested that the 1995 4x4 4runner is the preferred package for me in 1200, as some part numbers are simply bearing changes.

As an aside- since shopping around for the Toyota, was looking at pricing for my '15 MT6 Accord clutch. Why are the Honda's so much more, I would say double the Toyota in price- palladium coatings?
