SPOOL IN THE FRONT?
« on: Apr 14, 2005, 05:25:11 PM »
I am getting ready to swap in a 3/4 ton 8-lug dana 44 in the front of my toy, I was going to run a detroit tru-trac, but afer seeing one on a buddy's rig I totally changed my mind. I would run a full locker in the axle but too expensive, so I am concidering a spool, but somebody told me that it would be too hard to turn. I will be running hy-steer. is anyone on here running a spool, or know anybody running a spool? is it hard to turn on the trail/rocks?I dont use it on the streets so thats not an issue. any info would be greatly appreciated, thanx!  :best: :beerchug:

Why dont you just weld it? Alot of dudes run a spool or Lincoln locker up front with no problems. You could also run a ram steering setup to make it easier to turn

hope your powersteering its in shape. i run a welded front    with 37s and i dont notice it  unless my powersteering fluid starts to heat up and fade  or my lines burst lol.  Id suggest doing ram assist  to really help out especially since you are  trying to turn a aired down 40x18" wide tire.

no no dont spool it   like when ur wheelen the only way to turn is by unlocking one of ur hubs, and if this truck is gone B on the street ull never make it anywhere, jus leave it open diff or get a locker, no spool

I'm not in favor of a front spool, but unless the hubs are locked in it shouldn't matter on the street in 2wd.  Twin stick the beast if you want to make it turn easier.  I have a buddy running detroits f/r in a Blazer and doesn't have a problem, different wheelbase and track width I realize.

I vote No!  Who cares about how hard it is to drive.  I would not even think about spooling a 44. on 40's  that's carnage waiting to happen.   :nope:

I run a spool in the front after breaking 2 ez lockers.  Yes.. it can be hard to turn..... if you are in 4wd on pavement. other wise..I have never had a problem.   Even on the slick rock at moab. It WAS a pain before I had power steering.....I also added a tranny cooler and plumed it in line to the low pressure side of the steering box when I converted it over because I have heard of people having problems with it overheating running a front locker.  So far no problems.  If I had excess money :bayer: I would run an arb or an e-locker...But I don't.  As far as on the road in 2wd, it is not an issue if you unlock your hubs.....You do unlock your hubs in 2wd on the road right?? :smack: I say: run a spool (or weld it...same thing) And don't look back. You can spent more on a detroit or arb...But for those of us who arn't made on money......  :twocents:
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

I believe it.  My cousin had a full size .44 in his cj-5 with a 302 auto and he broke his axle 5 times in the year and a half he had it playing out on the nacheas trail.

Ive got a buddy that ran a 44 out of a dodge with 38 sx's,mini-spool, and hydro-assist in the front his yota. Broke every single time he went out, 1 hub,3 inners,2 outers, and 2 u-joints. Than sold it. I told him but he didnt listen, So I say run the spool. And when you start snap'n shafts, make sure you post pic's. I like pic's of carnage.

hey "notajeep", sounds good, thanx for the info. and like I had said in previouse posts, I dont use it on the street at all so the street handleing makes no differance to me, I got a daily driver so I'ts all good. oh, and if I do go with the dana 44 I wont be running stock stuff on it, 5:13's,moser axle shafts, longfield dana 44 u-joints. and I do not have power steering right now but at the same time that I'm doing my axles I'm going hy-steer(w/ power steering of course). so basically I dont use it on the street at all, as long as I can turn on the trail/rocks, it's all good.thanx for all the 411 guys! :beerchug:
