4-4runners

I am looking to do the Rubicon for the first time. I have a 1988 4Runner, SAS front, 4link rear, Detroit Lockers front/Rear, Twin Cases, Rear diff disconnect, Turning brakes, 3.0liter,  39.5 Irocz. While it is street legal by definition and it is plated and insured. It is not meant to run down the road at highway speeds? How/where do you go to start the trail? Im guessing I would have to have someone drop me off at the trail and meet me at the other end? Is there any groups or services in that area that can help with this?

Hey 4...

Yeah... As you know Ruby is a legendary 4x4 trail and still one of the most popular. It's about 17 miles long and elevation ranges from about 6000 to 7100 feet.

Your 3.0 is fuel injected so fuel mileage won't be as bad a carb'd engine.  BUT.. you will be surprised how much fuel you burn at 7,000 feet.

The scenery and landscape is beautiful, so be prepared to take lots of photos or video.

I've done it twice and it's a really fun day of wheeling, especially with the right group or friends.

Your vehicle sounds really well setup.

I'll offer 3 suggestions:

1 - Depending upon the time of year, mosquitoes might be an issue.
2 - I highly recommend having a knowledgeable trusted spotter.
3 - As I remember I was air'd down to about 5 lbs.

Since this will be your first time, it would be nice if you posted your experience here for us to read about.

Hey 4-4 runners,
You can go in at Tahoma and do Cadillac hill to the springs on one trip in and out. Then go in at loon lake to the springs on another trip in and out. Your rig should be fine as long as your not seeking out trouble, cause oh it can be found! Be patient depending on when you go, Have fun, pick your lines, and don't be afraid to get dirty cause truth be told there's no escaping the dust.  Just sayin, hope it helps.  :driving:
