Strange things are happenin'
« on: Apr 13, 2005, 09:01:37 PM »
I was driving home from school tonight, and as I slowed down and pulled up to stoplight, the engine kinda choked, and then sputtered and died.  Right when it choked, the check engine light came on.  It took a few seconds to start it back up, and once I got it startted, I had to give it gas to keep the truck from dying.  I pulled over, let go of the gas, and it ran fine :dunno: no check engine light or anything.  Drove it the rest of the way home, another 12-15 miles, and no problems at all, running completely normal.  any ideas what it could be?  I swapped this engine over about a month ago, and its been running well for a while, but then this happens :headscratch:  I am at a loss, can ya help me out?

I'd start by checking  grounds..See if you can find where the cpu gets its ground from..Only think I can think of being  iit was a one time deal..I think i would also check the fuel pump relay,,or swap it out if ya got another one..check its connection.
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!

This morning truck turned the key, and nothing at all from the starter.  Turned it agian, and it started after a lot of cranking.  drove it to work, it ran fine, then I turned it off, and tried to start it again, it took two or three times of cranking to get the engine to turn over, it seemed like it was getting very little gas.  Could my fuel pump be going out?  Is there a way to test this w/o using a voltmeter or something?  Could my fuel filtewr be so gummed up it is blocking part of the line?

it could be your fuel filter4 but if you are getting nothign from your starter then its an electrical problem as well chek all your grounds form the battery and from the starter and so on jsut make sure everything is hooked up correctly! also when you car died did all the radio and stuff turn off? change out the fuel filter they arent to much money and see what happens after that! they arent hard either!

gonna change my fuel filter anyway.  Nothing else shut off just the engine last night, and I dont care about the starter problem, that is unrelated I think, cause I had problems already, before last night.  I'm gonna look at my grounds, and see if any of them are loose, if I can remember where they all are :smack:

check the engine fuse, when it blows, the truck will run, but will die if you let it idle.

I think you should state what engine.  It's a 3.0 v6 right?  I don't know about the fuel filter being easy on those, it depends on where it is at.  Either way it will be a compression fitting filter, not an easy clamp on one like on the carbed trucks.  Also, the engine fuse will blow and the truck will still run?  That doesn't make any sense.

Definitly check your grounds, make sure all of them are there.  After an engine swap it is easy to forget one.  Also, the fuel pump is turned on by the air flow meter, then by the circuit opening relay.  If the air flow meter doesn't see any air it won't close contacts to turn on the pump.  This may let you start the truck, but then it will die, because its only running on the fuel it pumped when you first turned the key on.  Also, when you swapped out the engine, you had to disconnect alot of connections.  It may be that you have a loose, or dirty connection somewhere.

My check engine light came on, but it didnt stay on, so no code for me to check

WRONG

It stores the code even though it still doesn't see the fault. Its called a soft code. The original fault has stopped so the light went off BUT it retains the code.

Now if it stalls like the goofed the clutch and stalled it the check engine light will come back on and then you wont have a code but if it threw a light for any other reason it should still have a code stored as long as power to the ECM has not been interrupted.

im not sure about that because i was having transmission problems to where my check engine light would come on here and there and right after it came on it went back off before i could pull over i pulled over and got out my lil scan tool i keep in my runner and nothign showed up i was confused i thought it kept the code to but for some reason it didnt show a code the only time i got it to show a code is when the light was actually on

Theory nothing.  Going to goldendale for the calrocs event I was running 35" bfg's and 3.90's while shawnB's truck was running 5.29's and 35" bfg's.  His truck couldnt touch mine.  I dont know what the deal is but I have way more poop than any other re Ive driven.  Its weird but Im not complaining.

feul filter clogging
I think this is the answer.  It did it again yesterday, but it started right up and I kept going.  I am gonna change the filter this weekend, and see if that fixes it.  All ther grounds were good, and i checked a lot of connection too, and they were fine as well. its only done it 2 times in the past 3 days, so i dont think it is something consistent, like a bad connection or ground.  I think its just a really bad fuel filter.

Hey BD, the best thing to do first would be to check your codes. Regardless if the light is on or not, it stores the codes. It's the easiest and most practical thing to do first.

Let us know what, if any, codes ya got

Have you checked your engine oil level?
My 93 4 runner did that to me it turned out I was low on oil.  I added another quart of oil it went away.
