L50 to w56 and core short shifters
« on: Sep 17, 2020, 05:46:41 PM »
OK I’m sure this has been discussed at length but they want me to do my first post so I am putting a freshly rebuilt by Marlin crawler W56 into my 1981. I bought the transmission from a guy who had two of them this one had just been sitting around for a couple years on used since the rebuild. In my excitement I did not do enough research and didn’t know the amount of work it will take to get it in but that’s the fun part right... I guess.

The transmission did not come with a shifter so I’m gonna buy one from a company called Core Shifters and I’d love to know if anyone has any experience with them. I would’ve loved a marlin short shifter kit but they don’t have any right now so this kit looks pretty nice and my only option.

As for the crossmember relocation I was considering the T case crossmember from Front Range Fabrications. I was also looking at the Buds Built but honestly I like the design of the front range fabrication crossmember has anyone used it? Do you think there’s any issue with the fact that the front range fabrication crossmember threads in to the back of the T case instead of the bottom?

Anyway this is the first time I’ve ever posted on the forum been reading them for years happy to be here thankful for any responses I get

 :welcome:

The w56 is worth the effort, you'll be glad you did it.

I seem to recall someone saying that the FROR crossmember  caused their case to crack. That was years ago and Ive never seen anyone have an issue sense and tons of people use them.  Im thinking you may get more vibration with the poly bushings vs the factory rubber mount but I cant say for certain.   FROR is a good company with good products.

Does the new position of the shifter inside the cab work well for you?

Yes, just like factory. I cant remember if I had to cut any sheet metal for the transmission shifter but my tunnel has been reworked some.
