CV Reboot question
« on: Jul 14, 2020, 03:01:40 PM »
I've done the reboot on my 2000 Tacoma.  The boot kit from Toyota came with 2 different color greases.  1 for inner and 1 for outer.  I don't remember which went where.

Now the boot kit comes with 4 packs.  2 clear bags ..1 black and 1 bronze.  The other 2 bags are white I cannot see the color.  what changed and which goes where?

2 per side?  spline and boot each side?  Anybody able to help?  Kauai Toyota can't answer my question. :hammerhead:

Wow nobody?  I searched other forums/google and nothing.  What do I do with 4 different greases?  All Toyota said was "thinner is inner"

My guess is the two white bags are for the boots, the black for the inner splines, and the bronze color for the outside:dunno:

The dealer parts diagram, shows two bags for each boot, but nothing about the the color of grease.

I have a spare from Napa and the stock boots are not blown yet so I have some time.  My plan is to put in the Napa if I have boot failure on the stock.  Do the boot slide mod on it then I will always have 1 spare.  Eventually both Toyota CVs will have the boot slide.  Then the Napa one is the spare again.

I did it this way on my 2000.

As to the small grease packs my guess is the same as what you said..on the splines.  It makes sense the bigger ones go in the boots.  Just don't know what color goes where.

"Thinner for the inner"  that is the quote I read about which goes where.  Now, as I remember the inner is the tripod and the outer is a caged ball bearing.

The tripod would have needle bearings a closer tolerance or spacing than the outer caged outer ball bearings.  So that seems to be the reason the grease with lesser viscosity goes on the tripod.  The grease can "fit" in the spaces between the needles better.  The higher viscosity can fit between the balls of the outer.

Does this sound logical or did I fail engineering class?

What's the boot slide mod?.
When I reboot the axle i take the old boot and cut off the small part that goes onto the the axle shaft.  I  place the new boot on first. Then the cut off piece goes on behind that.  This is the small diameter end of the old boot where the band clamp connects to the shaft.  Then stretch the new boot so the fins will not rub each each other creating wear.  With a C/O lift the inner boot itself wears and then fails relealing all the grease.  Did it on my 2000 and it was successful.

Got the info from TTORA.  Hope I explained this properly.
