Bought my 88' Toyota truck in 1988 from Maui Toyota. Now over 260, 000 miles, it's running pretty good, but needs care once in a while. Did the front end and top of the 22re efi, about 50,000 miles ago. Next work is valve guide seal replacements. Got some some smoke. Being on an island away from most of you, this is great. A shout out to any Maui bruddahs on the forum. Mahalo

Have you done a compression test or leak down test?

Blew the head gasket, so replaced it and also did water pump, timing chain and guides. Pulled off air emission lines, and anything not required to "clean up" engine. Mistake, didn't do valve guide seals when into it. So now blowing a little smoke on take off. No real oul loss. Original compression numbers where good. Still no work on lower, pistons, rings etc. Love working on 22r's a make sense engine.

We also have an '88 Toyota truck, which my mom purchased new in Southern California.

I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but do you have any guesses what caused the blown head gasket on your truck? So far our truck hasn't had any major issues, and I'm trying to learn how to keep it that way.

Blown head gasket: I think I blew my head gasket because I flushed my coolant system with radiator cleaner. The truck had 180,000 miles and running fine. Water in radiator look brown so I read that radiator cleaner should be used. Big mistake. I flushed and he system, and immediately truck started blowing white smoke. When I go to the old gasket I saw exactly where the breach was, and how things the gasket had been eroded. I suggest flushing your system with just water, several times, don't use caustics. Your head gasket will last longer.
